Am I the only who thinks Evangelion is overrated?

Evangelion is not overrated. It deserves its spot by what it did with the series with the original ending.
All the characters in the series aren't characters, they're emotions. The entire show was the artist communicating directly with you on how he views himself, the world, and society ; and the question about what is the meaning of life and why?

That ending has a profound impact on millions of peoples lives, and we're talking about repressed Japanese people who are not allowed to express these types of thoughts and feelings publicly.
For the time this series came out, it was groundbreaking, and there aren't many series who tackle these hard topics, especially not as a giant twist in the last few episodes. The show is really not for kids, it's for adults, the themes will fly over heads unless you're mature and probably depressed looking for answers to questions you're not even aware you're seeking.
Evengelion is a refined series that'll stay relevant for decades to come, and the intro song is a banger.

If you watch it any other way, it's a subpar anime. But if you watch it with the intended ending and purpose, it's amazing

Takerial Lovable Teddy Bear
Evangelion was top tier anime at the time of it's release and one of the few 90's anime that is aging well.

While some of the fan love is definitely nostalgia, it is absolutely not over rated. And the reason for that is the impact it has had on the anime scene.

It was one of the few shows that shaped what today's anime has become, and has so much influence in what has been created even if you don't realize it.

I think it's great but the way it's worshiped and used to look down on everything else is kind of ridiculous and it's overrated not because it's bad but because people put it on such an insane pedestal. I'd say the same for Cowboy Bebop which is also an excellent series but has a similarly crazy fandom surrounding it.

It's somewhere between greatest anime of all time and worst anime ever. It's all subjective.

I think it has a deserved reputation. I can understand why people are disappointed with it nowadays, but I watched it long after it aired and could definitely see its merits. I thought it did some worthwhile/groundbreaking things, and was pretty straightforward.

Sure it can be ruff around the edges and get repetitive, but when you judge something, I think it's important to consider the time it came out. They did a lot with the resources they had.

I do think it's slightly overrated, but it's still great. The thing I like most about Evangelion, is that it's a great gateway for people to see anime as more than just some cartoons.
