.hack//G.U. Trilogy

It is a 3D, cel-shaded movie version of the .hack//G.U. games.

I watched a fansub of it from LuPerry. Naturally, I loved it. Of course, if you haven't played the games, you might be confused, though I'd like to hear the opinions of people who haven't played the G.U. games at all.

Oh yeah, Parody Mode rocks! ... But you have to have played the games to even have even a remote sense of how funny it is.

I haven't watched it yet, but watched the parody mode first.

As a humongous .hack freak, to the point of soon getting a tattoo of Aura and owning every thing of .hack (including Japan-only releases like .hack//zero), I have to say .. I disliked it. Completely and utterly.

The plot was incoherent, disjointed, and nonsensical. Hell, the plot wasn't even there. They had, what, about 4 lines of mention on Epitaphs? About the same for Aina. The only thing they focused on was Atoli x Haseo pairing and they even half-assed that. We went from Haseo hating her, to them getting along within about five minutes, .. with very few quick Arena cut-scenes that weren't even made clear to what was happening. Suddenly, it snapped back to the storyline, and they're hanging out. Then it snaps forward again, and he's in love with her? It was absurd.

Aura was thrown in at the end without any mention previous and everything was just completely rushed and not done well. I understand they only have limited time for three games worth of stuff but, .. they should have just made .hack//GU+ into a movie. Would've worked fine.

@ DruVirus:
Somebody hasn't watched FF7: Advent Children ...

I figured as much when I first heard about it. Compressing three games into 90 minutes could never work out. I watched it because, like Advent Children, the whole movie is basically fanservice in the literal sense.

My only issues are ...
Spoiler:
The Kamehameha and Rasengan that Haseo uses in Xth Form, the Haseo x Atoli bubble scene lasted a minute or two too long, no Cubia, and Azure Kite's eyes were yellow.

Like tsujoi, I haven't got round to watching it yet but I've watched the parody mode - as a big fan of Alkaid it was certainly one hell of a treat.

It goes without saying that lot would have to be cut out. It was made for fans of .hack who had played the games already, not for people who were new to the franchise. It was only released in limited cinemas in Japan so it wasn't meant to be a huge hit or anything.

played the games, watched the videos and even watched roots but all I can say is that the last sequel is much much more better than the G.U. series cause the story of the first 4 series (infection, mutation, Outbreak and Quarantine ) not to mention the series "Legend of the Twilight Bracelet" is like Epic... they really gave it their all in there... but can't say that it's all bad it's just that the story of G.U. is a bit confusing and a bit lame

Buh? I saw Advent Children before most people knew what it was, a'ight? In any case, Advent Children at least had a coherent plot. It didn't just skip around and not make sense. I mean, I was young when I played FFVII .. I barely remember anything about it, other than what I just hear now-a-days from people. But Advent Children made sense. It had a beginning, middle, and end .. all with a consistent plot. But Trilogy? I barely understood it and I'm a .hack freak. I can't even imagine what it would be like if people saw it and weren't into the games at all. It just jumped all over, showed scenes and didn't describe them, and didn't have any real .. plot. It had the very basic "You're an epitaph user. Tri-edge is bad." followed by "I love Atoli." and the end.

Like I said .. if they just did the GU+ manga into a movie, it'd be the same time and it'd make much, much more sense.

"Before most people knew what it was"?

Anyway, while I may disagree with you about AC having a coherent plot, my point was that one should never expect a well-made plot from the compression of a JRPG story into a single 90 minute movie.

I agree to that... the story of advent children became solid because of it's prequels (Final Fantasy VII(original), Crisis Core, Last Order) and the story of FF7 is very popular so most of us know it, unlike .hack//G.U. and roots. it's story isn't based on the previous .hack// series only the plot and the locations are co-related...

(Played all the games, read the manga, etc.)
I didn't expect anything awesome out of this movie; 90 minutes, as already stated, isn't much time for a three games to fit into. I didn't try to compare it to the series, games, or manga, and watched it as a separate entity. Probably why I wasn't disappointed.

And the parody mode was hilarious- I loved the part when they dubbed over the classroom scene and had Atoli shrieking at Haseo calling him a pimp and such. "If they are all girls I could understand; but even Bo!? Even a little boy like HIM!?
