Exciting and fun, huh? If you're looking for action, here are a few suggestions:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Crazy over-the-top epic shounen mecha series. It's got a couple rough edges, but overall is the best you'll find in the genre.
Baccano: More violence and non-linear storytelling, but a fantastic cast and story. And did I mention the violence? Yeah, there's a lot of that.
Soul Eater: The exploits of students at a school dedicated to the elimination of corrupted souls. Very cartoony at first glance, but has some dark undercurrents.
Moving back in time a bit, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Cowboy Bebop are classic action series that are definitely worth picking up. The first is focused around a military intelligence unit in a cyberpunk future, and the second is star travelin' bounty hunters who are perpetually strapped for cash. Both are excellent.

Not an amazingly great anime, but it passes the time and it's very... unique... in how the bad guys work. Bit of the ol' Tsundere in there and the girl's protecting the guy, so a bit of a Role reversal as well
There's 48 episodes, 24 per season. Plus 6 more but I'm not sure if they're canon to the main story. I know you said no more than 50 episodes, but I'm coming up short with anime to watch myself.

The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, high school, comedy, supernatural, not really for everyone but you never know
Fullmetal Alchemist, it's 51 episodes but it is definitely worth the investment

Angel Beats, funny, dramatic, touching, crazy, it's got just about everything
Hellsing OVA, action packed with vampires that don't sparkle
Elfen Lied, something gory and perverted
Higurashi, something gory and fucked up
