The media has caused an unnecessary panic again. They did it for Mad Cow Disease, SARS, Swine Flu, Bird Flu, and now this. All I fucking hear about on the news right now is about this virus. They all petered out fairly quickly thanks to health efforts.

The worst affected area is China, where it originated from. The mortality rate for actually contracting the virus is extremely low. The infection can be treated and fought off, with higher chances of survival if you're younger; at least 48,540 people have recovered from it. Source: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Does suck if you're italian right now though, they make up around half of the current most recent deaths.
Edit: Statistics have changed but there's still a substantial amount compared to the amount of cases there are.

It's great that damage has been kept minimal by all those involved, people are taking this seriously, and I can understand the need to be extremely wary of a new virus that can kill, and it's good there's a cure coming up. But the extensive media coverage on this just bewilders me. I guess news outlets have nothing better to report on right now.

Yeah ignore all this past me was an idiot. I should've kept my tinfoil hat off.

I barely go out so I'm good. But I gotta get groceries later though, so might be fucked.

I have the white blood cells of 20 people at this point. I don't even think the plague would kill me.

I remember ebola had a similar media hype and all that media panic stimulated vaccine development, when news hosts told you could catch it by holding a handrail in a bus near you. Well, in moscow it's reverse media attention, for the past month cable tv first 4 channels keep accenting on how its not even comparable to the other epidemics and death tolls from flu. Meanwhile the masks are all sold out cause of the "annual" post winter virus season, plus hospitals and kindergardens take your temperature on entrance (which is exotic)

We've had severe panic to the point of people buying out toilet rolls. It's fucking ridiculous.

I can see the merit of the media covering it, which might encourage research into a vaccine, but at the same time the extensive coverage and the tone of the reports make out as if it's going to infect you and if you're infected you're basically dead.
They always mention a new case and a new death. That always results in panicking someone.

Lol one big marketing campaign for arse napkins. I low-key hope that's true, so someone gets sued.

But yeah it happened here in the UK as well. Supposedly a lot of the deaths are either from old age or with other health issues. Or both.

Now there's posters and shit being put up everywhere telling you to wash your hands and blow your nose into a tissue and disposing of it properly. Even have one at my workplace.

So I saw the bad rush to Costco to get all the toilet paper, water and canned food yesterday. Facebook using tools.

Lmao it really did, and I didn't even post it that long ago. I was being far too cynical so I'll take that one on the chin. Mind you I don't think a lot of people truely expected it to force the world into quarantine at that stage. I certainly didn't, and here we are.

On a related note, Michael Rosen caught it. Already seen a few hoaxes floating around that he's kicked it.
