Are tomatoes a fruit or a vegetable?

I have always thought they were vegetables. But a lot of people I talk to seem to think they are fruits. So what do you think?

By technical definition, a tomato is a fruit as it is the "ovary, together with its seeds, of a flowering plant."
But it's generally used as a vegetable in cooking, so in general uses it could be both.

It IS a fruit, but to everyone it's a vegetable, I still refer to is as a veggie, but in all technicality it's a fruit.

Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with most of the people here. People like to think of it as a veggie in cooking(because they put it in their salads?)
Personally, knowing whether its a fruit or veggie doesn't matter to me, I eat both.

The way I used to think of it was that fruits had seeds and Veggies don't. Of course after thinking about it for a while I realised that doesn't work so I usually just call the plant by its name.

According to biolology it is a fruit but since it is not as characteristically sweet as regular fruit and people general use it as a veggy within cooking I consider it a veggy.

The only consistent definition of vegetable I can find is an edible part of a plant. A fruit is a part of a flowering plant with one or more ovaries.
