Well Bella is pretentious, Asuna is pretentious. Kirito is one dimensional and Edward is one dimension. The mythological aspect of environment serve as a catalyst to expand the story beyond it's necessary means. Vampires, Werewolves, Artificial reality, it's the setting and mythology but it plays little in terms of story aspect and more in terms of establishing the excuse for a grander yet unneeded and unparalleled world. Don't see how you can't see the similarities.

That said I was caught between Yuno x Yukiteru and Ryuuji x Taiga but my love for Yandere out weighted my love for Tsundere, there is nothing sexier than submission.

Kirito and Asuna are just a fork and spoon pairing, much like Bella and Edward. Fairy Tail exemplifies what a fork and spoon pairing is. Almost on every fairy Tail video, it's someone saying Gajeel X Levy or Natsu X Lucy or Makarov X Fuck-face. People just see a girl and boy in an anime and just pair them mindlessly without any effort or thought put into the relationship. You could make a manga about a fork and spoon and people would pair them. It's so easy, just create a boy and create a girl, give them boring characteristics and they will automatically be pairing. Twilight's success in a nutshell.

Lawrence & Holo for me. Just got to love how similar their personalities are yet how different their ways of thinking.
A shame to see SAO in the lead, since all I see is a prime example of the suspension bridge effect in Kirito & Asuna. She fell for him because she was in emotional turmoil, suddenly forced to fight for her life and found a guy who could still find enjoyment in the situation, while he fell for her simply because she saved his life from a madman. As for the actual relationship, it's essentially co-dependent: without the other, they go into utter BSOD mode. And yet another thing that ires me, magically their love allows them to break the rules of the game: the duel with Kayaba has both of them breaking out the cheats, Asuna to move while paralyzed and Kirito to stall death to get in one more hit.
Honorable mentions:
Yukiteru & Yuno; An acknowledged co-dependent relationship, but the darkness of it makes it more believable than it's SAO counterpart.
Shinichi & Ran; An unwavering relationship despite the separation between the two. Shame they only managed to confess after God knows how many chapters/episodes.
Araragi & Senjougahara; One's a cynical guy, the other's a batshit insane yandere ice queen. What's there not to love?
Haruhi & Kyon; Similar to L&H, With a tinge of A&S, but far less of a thing in the story.

I voted Kirito x Asuna from "SAO" out of the choices on the basses that imo they are the most loving pair in the choices. But I would have voted Kaoru Hanabishi x Aoi Sakuraba from "Ai Yori Aoshi" on the bases that they loved each other so much that they basically gave up everything to be together.

No surprise about the lead. Kids be going crazy for that SAO. I'm assuming since it's a very recent anime that people have, for some reason, really attached onto the show is helping it's lead jump. I'm curious to see if it'd get such a lead in a few years though. Probably not as there would just be some new hyped up anime pair I guess.
