Do you consider pornography a form of art?

It goes without saying that hentai artwork is, by definition, a form of art.

But there exist some people who think that pornography and erotic artwork are specifically incapable of being considered "art" because they serve the niche purpose of exciting sexual feelings and desire. I strongly and heavily disagree with this double-standard.
Creative expression shouldn't and doesn't need to 'justify' its contents in order to be recognized for meeting the objective definition of "art".

I find it very difficult to take any argument that seeks to argue that pornography isn't art that they're doing so in good faith.
Eroticism and sexual desire are valid emotions and aesthetics worthy of expression and communication via explicit visual mediums. To deny that is to impose a superficial double-standard that only weakens the premise of what "art" truly is, and that is simply to create and express.

One could argue logically and convincingly that pornography is a form of "low" art, much akin to the vapid entertainment industry, but not that it somehow is precluded from being considered a valid form of art.

Where does everyone else stand on this?

I agree.

The act of sex itself is considered by some to be an art form - the ability to bring pleasure to your partner through an act of intimacy and communication. An act where the journey matters as much if not more than the destination, much like you would consider the process of creating a picture.

For publically viewable sex, pornography, there is a lot of trash out there. Nobody would doubt that. That doesn't mean it can't have diamonds in the rough. If it can help stimulate the imagination (in this instance, to help you get off), isn't that what art is all about? Applies more-so to drawn art, but can apply to live action as well.

I consider it art if their was effort behind it.

When it really lacks effort then it's just smut, otherwise it is an expression of uncouth emotions like lust, desire, etc. And art is all about expressing ones self.

But those are valid emotions, whether or not they seem 'uncouth'. Art is indeed about expressing oneself, and pornography achieves that goal.

I think art has always had some amount of pornography in it. The nude sculptures if ancient Greece and Rome that are now widely considered art were likely the most pornlike stuff available at the time

I agree with the previous speaker. And no matter how much someone dislikes it, but pornography is also a kind of art.

Hentai is art and so is porn. that simple case closed

Yes it’s all about creativity

Of course it's art. That's what we call almost all forms of human expression: drawing, painting, sculpting, making music, theatre, film, etc.. I've personally known several fine artists (painters, mostly) who sniff in disdain at what they call low art, but I tend to remind them that some of humanity's oldest artistic expression were sexual in nature. Sex is part of the human experience, too. The main reason I started reading comics is because I found the women to be sexy af!

Now, if you wanted to make the argument that not all forms of art have the same societal value, I'd still defend porn as art. Some of it isn't as good as others, but I think that can be said of all art forms. I'll take "Also sprach Zarathustra" over Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" any day, for example. But a world without porn wouldn't exist unless every last man on Earth was dead. It is as much a part of who we are as the food we eat. As creatures of lust, it's only natural that we would try and elevate one of most important basic impulses to a higher plane, just as we try and make the tastiest food we can.

It is a form of art.
it's in the vein as modern art, it's not a lot of people's first thought or interpretation of "art", hell, some people even hate it just like modern art.
A piece of art is meant to illicit a reaction out of someone, most porn just has a much more obvious reaction that it's looking for ( and if it's got great character's or specific fetishes you'll get more reactions)

Yes it is art and is often on the forefront of technology. Look at VR for example. They are trying to bring the experience as close as possible.
