excessive running

I severely twisted my ankle 6 weeks ago, and I've not been doing any aerobic exercising the last 6 weeks. tomorrow I will be cleared for running, which is really good, as I have a basketball game on friday night. I will be doing tons of running in those 2 days, probably more than I've ever done in my life.

My question is, can hurt myself from running? I love to push myself, but I usually stop when I start getting dizzy from exhaustion. I will try to push myself harder than ever, but is it possible to push myself too hard?

also, should I eat carbohydrates, protein, or both?

Well for cardio, or any training generally the rule of thumb is you spend twice the amount of time resting that you exerted. So for whatever you ran, say an hour, you would then rest for two.

In terms of building stamina or cardio if that's what you're trying to do, overloading yourself like that is just counter-productive. You may think you're taking a fast lane, but all it's doing it damaging your body. The best way to build stamina and cardio is to set yourself a schedule and pace yourself. Start from a 1 hour run for a week/two (depends how much you run during a week), then move onto 1 hour and 15 the next week and then 1 hour 30 mins the following etc. The most important part is to make sure your body gets rest though.

Nutrients albeit beneficial, won't help in making your body circulate blood and oxygen more sufficiently. You can have a hybrid car, with energy efficient wheels and be using bio fuel, but the best way to cut down is to drive more efficiently yourself yeah?

Take it from someone who got shin splints from doing plyometrics and squatting 3x a week to increase his vertical for varsity basketball. I was able to obtain a 32' vertical (after I rested up from shin splints and jumper's knee)but I was injured for the whole season and pretty much was sluggish all the time. I spent most of my time on the bench for that year cause my knee was killing me and I honestly thought about quitting the team cause I could barely make it through practice.

There's no point in training if your going to end up hurting yourself. Train hard but train smart. Over training leads to minimum gains and an increase in potential injuries (long term and short term).

As for foods, carbohydrates will be your best friend before and after your workout. I suggest a banana after you work out because of the high amounts of potassium which help with muscle cramping. But you also need protein to recover so bring a protein shake as well afterwards or even better, a banana whey protein shake :D.

Yeah, its always possible to push yourself too much. Your joints also need rest just like your muscles and they're harder to heal too. Plus, it can lead to overtraining and your overall body will be fatigued all the time.
