The only thing that sucks though is when you have a sensitive stomach and have allergies to dairy, so it isn't for everyone :,(
*thinks about childhood and inability to eat ice-cream when sick*
Too bad. Then try to eat ice cream while drinking hot tea or hot coffee or hot chocolate ?
As for allergies, nothing can be done. You still can eat sherbet instead of ice cream.

On this topic though, whenever I have a stomach bug, i used to always get cola from my parents (who are very much anti-soda) cause they said it would kill everything in the stomach. I think the real reason was to make miserable child me feel better with a rare treat.
Great parents, I assure you.
As for cola when ill from the stomach, maybe a guess...
CO2 may help/smooth the acid synthesis, and when the gas reaches the blood and spreads, it may counterbalances the postprandial alkaline wave that is normally released throughout blood during acid synthesis. Plus the eructations may decieve the stomach willing to throw up. The caffeine and citric acid help to boost, too. Long story short, it seems to help to digest even though your stomach is tired and upside-down.
