In what ancient place do you want to live?

If you are given the chance to live in an ancient place or country for 70 years, what place/country will you choose?

SEVERAL CONDITIONS:

1. You can choose any era from the beginning of recorded human history to 1000 AD.

2. You automatically assume the position of a middle class citizen. You won't be an upper or lower class citizen but you still have to live and work normally.

3. All your modern knowledge disappears so you can't go and say "I go to 2000 BC Japan and invent guns and conquer the entire world!" or something of that sort.

4. You are guaranteed to live 70 years under normal circumstances, unless a disease, war, famine etc decimates more than 65% of the total population of where you are.

Please state the date (in years) you want to start living in your chosen place because it could affect the politics, ruler, status and condition of living, etc.

Fictional Example: You choose Cuteland 100-170 AD. Their Golden Age was 100-160 AD. Afterwards, 161 AD the entire country was sacked, looted and all men turned into slave. Well, you don't want to choose that.

I'm choosing Rome 42 BC. Augustus Caesar ruled from 27 BC - 14 AD

Why? (This is a summary and simplification)
So I get to enjoy Pax Romana which is 200 years of peace, lots of good tax reforms, an army that is well paid and where retiring soldiers are given land. The Roman Army at this time was so strong that it really protected the citizens. A time when a lot of roads, bridges, public buildings (like baths) and government buildings are being built, and where a police force and fire brigade were implemented.
The Roman funds, taxes and treasury are really being used for improving Rome.
Octavian may not be the perfect leader, but he became the image of the ideal Roman leader.

This doesn't quite seem like Serious Discussion material. Maybe the Random section would be better suited for this.

I'm not sure of a specific period off hand, maybe I'll edit this after I give it some more thought, but definitely some point during Ancient Egypt. Mostly just because as a kid growing up, I was always fascinated by the ancient Egyptian culture.

I want to live during the Golden Ages of England right before the Dark Ages.

The history nerd in me is came a little at this topic.

I could think of many historical places that would be both pleasant and interesting, but I'd my favorite would probably be Constantinople c. 800-1000 CE. I actually think the 11th and 12th centuries would be nice too, but that falls outside of the time range.

OP definitely hit upon one of the other ones I would be interested in. Others that come to mind:

Iraq during the early Abbasid Caliphate (c. 750-900 CE)
India during the reign of Asoka (late 3rd century BCE)
China during the early Han dynasty (2nd century BCE)
China during the early Tang dynasty (7th century CE)
Iberia during the Umayyad Emirs/Caliphs (c. 700-1000 CE)
Persia during the reign of Cyrus the Great (mid 6th century BCE)

The cutoff date is a real shame. I'm a huge fan of the medieval era (c. 500-1500 CE) in a global aspect, and many of my favorite choices would have been shortly after 1000.

Umm... when was this? Are you talking about Roman Britain? I've never heard of any period of English history before the Renaissance described as "Golden."

I think "say what!" is trying to say that you're acting like an idiot by calling out the OP for asking a perfectly legitimate question. And that it's your response that belongs in IB, not the OP.
