Marvel announces that the famous super hero Thor will now be presented as a woman. She is not a substitute, she is not Thorita or She-Thor... Thor is now a female.
I love comics and the super hero genre. Marvel and DC are what i grew up with. I have ALWAYS been supportive of stronger female roles in the super hero world. One of the reasons I like DC better than Marvel is because of their stronger presence of female hero's. Zatanna & Raven are two of my favourite hero's. But changing Thor's gender, it makes me unhappy. What are your guy's opinions?

If they're trying to appease and cater to the female audience, they're going about it all the wrong way. If anything it's offensive to everybody. It's offensive to the fans of Thor and the people who enjoyed the character. Not to mention... Thor just isn't some made up original character, he's a mythological God depicted as a male.

It's also offensive towards females in the way that they're trying to appease and go 'look look, you can hold a hammer too" If they want a female lead that represents strength... then make a new character and show her strut her stuff. Don't recycle an already developed character.

I'm actually in the denial stage of "This can't be real" right now =/ Surely they wouldn't do something this ridiculous.

Wow that's just ridiculous. Everyone knows Thor is a dude, has always been a dude, and should always be a dude. You can't just change him into a girl, he would completely cease to be Thor. I just can't accept Thor being made female after all these years of seeing him portrayed as a macho buff guy with a hammer, it's just plain weird.

I'd have no complaints if Marvel decided to make a new female character with Thor's powers or something, but this is just crazy. Come on Marvel, make Thor have a daughter or make up something that makes even the slightest bit of sense!

I'm more concerned with "Black Captain America" with Sam Wilson AKA Falcon. As Loki also had the genderbender treatment so there's no "real" argument for me.

I honestly don't really care, but why don't they just actually push forward pre-existing characters rather than just shoe horn gender and race into a famous role.

Like actual Black Captain America's in the past, Isaiah Bradley or his son Josiah.(his grandson Elijah is too young)

1. Not true. In the 70's they had a stint where Thor was a woman. It was Jane Foster who took over and carried the hammer. Later in the 80's and 90's they have Thor be taken over by a horse and a frog. If people could handle being a farm creature then they can handle a woman, again.

2. They didn't change Thor the man into a female. They actually released a few of the pages, and it looks like Unworthy Thor lost his hammer in a fight with a frost giant or something and she kinda just walks by in and picks it up. So again, it's not like it his the character himself that changed ala Loki style.

I am excited, shit I am cosplaying this new reboot, so of course I am excited. I just don't like the way the media and has presented the new comic. I have always seen it as whoever holds the hammer gains the title of Thor, but when they announced this change they made it seem like he gained a vagina over night. Which of course angered so many dude bros.

Plus the creator went a little too a head of themselves, by saying 'THIS IS THOR', she isn't Thor, she is a new character that got his hammer/powers, we will still see male Thor in her comics. Anyways, I have had too many people flip out, I am sure this is just going to be a subtle main arc, until Unworthy Thor gets his shit together and gets his hammer back.

First you take him from the mythology and change him completely. You even make everyone think Loki and thor are siblings... and now. THIS?! WTF...

You're welcome. Too many people have jumped and said "AH NO, THOR HAZ NO TITS", but it's just not the case, this is a new character with the title of Thor, too many people just haven't looked into before jumping into the 'This is Blasphemy Stage'.

Here are those released panels where she grabs the hammer. As you can see, Thor is still there, just without his hammer, the hammer she grabbed.

+ Her costume is wicked and was so easy to make. I think it will be a nice change for the females to have something cool to base it off.

Well as long as she's a new character then I don't have a problem. I just think it would be stupid to suddenly change the original Thor into a woman.

By the way, if that picture of the female Thor costume is yours then good job! It looks good.

From what I am reading, and if you read otherwise then please post up a link so i could read as well, This female Thor isn't a takeover of a new character like When John Stewart takes over Hal Jordans position as the green lantern. They want to change thor's gender and play it off as thor always being a woman.
Also, there is currently a petition going on right now against Marvel, asking them to stop calling Thor "The god of thunder" and to stop reffering to his/her hammer as "Mjolinir" due to it being religiously and culturally insensitive to modern Asatrue religion.

I did read it. I'm just replying to what Fro said about there being a female Thor in the 70s. I also read the Marvel article that OP linked in his post. As I said before, I think it's ridiculous if Marvel goes through with having the original Thor suddenly be a woman. If it's just a parody or spin-off of Thor, then I would think that would be fine. However if they announce that Thor is now suddenly a woman, then I doubt hardcore Thor fans would easily accept that.

I'm not a Thor fan and I don't follow the comics. I don't know exactly how Marvel is going to execute their female Thor plan or if it will just be a spin-off or a permanent change to Thor's character. I'm just expressing what I think from the details written on the marvel website.

I don't really mind the gender change, it would be an interesting read at least for a bit although i don't know why they didn't just make a new comic and have it as Thor's daughter or something...

I don't really care. Story should be good considering the person who is writing has been doing awesome job so far.

Thor has been a frog, it's not a big deal.
We'll get back to the status quo eventually, like every other comic character.

Again, as far as I can tell. Male Thor as we know is not going to be a female. Thor lost his hammer. Thor is weak atm, some female now holds Mjolnir. She is taking the TITLE of Thor.

Just like the title of Captain America revolves around who has the shield, it is the title of Thor and his hammer. It kinda looks like what they did with Kate Bishop and how she became Hawkeye.

Seriously, even Midtown has the description up.

I really don't believe that they are completely changing a gender; from the teaser panels, and the following of the Unworthy Thor arc it looks like it's a new character. I think the media just announced the new character in the wrong way. + It is mine, thank you.

EDIT;

Okay, here is your link along with the full press release.

I am just a really big comic fan, and I don't like when information is misconstrued, I am sorry if I am getting repetitive, but Thor is a title now, not a character, and anyone can take a title.

TLDR; Either way it's not reason to flip, because like he said

Never read any comics and haven't seen the Thor specific films either. I did see The Avengers. Personally i don't really care at all, doesn't rock my boat either way. I don't how ever understand the reasoning behind this, as to why make a already established character have a sex change as if it always was the other gender. Doesn't make much sense...

Why they don't make Thor a black woman? Or Asian woman?

DatYuriThough Goddess of Nature
Couldn't care either way. As long as it is interesting and not some bullshit stereotypical plot that does nothing different then I'm fine with it, go ahead. It's their creation to do with what they want (as long as they can live with the failure or success that it brings). Personally it'll be interesting to see what they do with it...but as I said, not really bothered.
