So My Friend Made me Listen to the Residents

My friend was all "do you know the Residents" and I replied "I know of them" and rapidfire, he threw album and song recommendations at me.
I'm not going to say I "like" the music in the same way I like, say, smooth jazz of epic orchestral metal. But at the same time, I definitely enjoy listening to this stuff, and being a musician, the whole "deconstruction of established norms" thing they have going is both delightfully intelligent and refreshing. Their iconography is especially great; they were definitely ahead of their time with the whole "multimedia as an artistic medium" thing. ...on the other hand, it's slightly pretentious and "art for art's sake", which is the kind of thing I usually hammer down on with the might of a thousand suns. Somehow, their eccentricity has granted them immunity from this particular criticism.
So, who else listens to/has listened to/likes The Residents? I'll probably dig deeper, for sure; if for no other reason than Primus covered a whole bunch of their songs and I fucking love Primus.
