you can't necessary expect all that much from programs handled by governmental organizations.
not all governments are that great :/
many lack infrastructure, transparency, and support; instead, they're riddled w/ corruption.
many people, for the sake of their sanity, rely on religion-- and that is what helps them hope that better things will come, no matter how painful their reality currently may be.

the best anyone can do is try to not be ethnocentric.

(just a note~ i'm not a particularly religious person.)

What about coins? The copper in our money must at least be worth the coin, and don't you have silver coins?

We have even had debates within the government about removing the penny from production since it costs more to make them than they are worth. I believe the current penny is a zinc base with a copper plating. We don't have silver coins unless you count the "silver" dollar. Which is just a name for any one dollar coin that is made from a white or silver looking metal such as the Sacagawea dollar and the Presidental dollar coin program that is supposed to be made in the future.

Unlike Canada we use bills for one and two dollar increments while on the rare occasion you will see someone using a one dollar coin. Its pretty rare to see a two dollar bill and most stores won't accept them because they don't believe the bill is real currency.

Penny, Nickle, Dime, Quarter, One Dollar are the only coins that are in circulation.

Why do you call it a penny if it's 1 cent?

We measure things in increments of 12! We're America we do what we want!

Seriously though, I don't have a clue. Never really put thought into why it is called a penny. Didn't know there was a deeper story behind it.

What a shame. But that's how things work, mmh. If we could do something, we could.

Just watched it today. Sad. :(

To make it clear, this wasn't a normal charity event. This event is called a Zakat charity.

It's now Ramadhan and muslims go into fastings and self-restraint for a month. And in Ramadhan muslims are obligated to give zakat.

This tragedy happens because there are no queuing lines, no security and unorganized charity system.

Muslims don't perform zakat (Arabic for "charity," I believe) only during Ramadan. Zakat is a year long contribution, where one donates approx. 10% of his/her earnings to a charity.

At the end of Ramadan, there's an Eid (a celebration), where Muslims are obligated to feed the poor in an orderly fashion. This is the first time I've ever heard of simply throwing money into a crowd. Then again, culture and national bg shape the practice of religion.

-still confused-

You're right in saying it can be done at any time of the year, but because of the customs associated with Ramadan, many choose to pay it then. Zakaah is the Islamic practice of paying alms. Those who qualify for it are required to pay whatever exceeds their nisab, an amount equal to the essential needs of that person or family for one year. I'm not Muslim and I'm not an expert on the customs, so anyone who knows more, feel free to correct me where I'm wrong.

They weren't just throwing money out into a crowd. Its not something new, the family does the same thing every year and they give each person an equal amount. So, I'm supposing they have come up with some method to make sure that the money is distributed as equally and fairly as possible. The only reason why this happened is because there were far more people there in previous years and everyone was afraid that they wouldn't get some of money. The fact that the family is being blamed for the impatience and greed of the people, is fucking bullshit. The family was giving away what they could and just because the people were poor and were given an opportunity didn't mean that each person was individually entitled to a portion.

To me its just another example of humans being human. Being poor doesn't mean that you can just fucking go nuts whenever there's a chance to get a bit of money.

Could be because we call ours a penny, but that's because it's 1 pence.

Americans call our 1 cent coins pennies, but the US Mint's official name for them is "cent," thus the reason why we refer to our change as cents. I just found that out, but in hindsight its blatantly obvious and I can't believe that it took me this long to learn. I told my mom and she didn't even know.

it can be kinda surreal to see the poverty that exists in other countries. when I was in Guatemala people were literally baked alive inside their own homes because of shoddy construction (their homes were built out of sheet metal). It really shows the difference between the haves and the have-nots.

Somehow it seems inappropriate but true

this isn't really a case of thinning the heard of the weak and sick. Darwinism has no place in this topic. this is the poor trying to get one step ahead in the world and dying as a result

Natural selection works in weird ways. I count wars, disease, and accidents as natural selection. It kinda loses its naturalness but then again It is all a part of nature now
0
wars and accidents are too random to be natural selection. Anyone can die in a war or an accident, from the idiots to the best and the brightest.

Luckiest is also something that, if it were possible to calculate it, would be a serious part of Darwinism. Luck is a definite determining factor, you can be the brightest, strongest, and toughest guy around, but if your luck sucks, you still end up 6 feet under because you were in the area of a gang shooting and one of them missed their intended target, but they didn't miss your skull.

Luck can get you through a war even if you are a complete, physically and intellectually, loser.
