4chan is too busy on JLaw's nudes for them to DDoS anime torrents.

PROTIP: Check MAL. You probably have watched Gundam SEED with its 9001 action-packed episodes oozing with epicness!

4chan is actually trying to find out who did the DDoS and fuck THEM up. Or at least /a/ is.

Weremovemedia 's Twitter account indirectly led people on to think they did it. but they probably didn't.

/a/ is saying that the Japanese government is funding Russian and Chinese bots to bring nyaa down.

It hit over 25GB per second in traffic. People with unlimited internet services would have their service disabled within a minute if this happened to an individual.

Nyaa's host was programmed to shut down if it hit 25 GBps exactly.

A DDoS of this size is pretty damn serious. Which is probably why people blame the Japanese Government.

The legality of this is kind of dubious. On the one hand, DDoS attacks that cost more than 5,000 USD is a crime in the USA. But its gotta be damn hard to confirm Japan's government is involved. Not to mention the fact that the ISP claims being send to nyaa. What can they say?

"Yeah, this government is involved in illegal activities becaused they DDoSed us in retaliation for our possibly illegal activities!"

Real talk: I thought Gundam Seed was more watchable than Destiny would ever be.

Check fansubbers' own sites, they post mirror torrent links. I know WhyNot and Vivid are doing that.

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry published a paper of the speculated revenue loss from torrents among the list were sites like Nyaa, ThePirateBay, Batoto and Mangafox.

Link to the powerpoint, and press release.

Apparently the Japanese govt. is DDoS these sites because of suspected revenue loss.

Which is bullshit because all of us on the internet know that there is no way to prove those that pirated would have bought it in the first place. Not to mention there is a substantial portion of people that torrent some stuff and then buy it later.

But whatever if they want to engage in sketchy activities so be it. There are other sites to get torrents and if you're truly desperate you can stream as well.

Yeah, the biggest misconception in the heads of governments and companies is that in their minds every single torrented file is supposedly a lost revenue, when the truth is for many people the only option is to watch these shows through torrents and/or is the the only reason they watch them in the first place because they can torrent them, but it doesn't mean that now everybody is magically gonna buy more movies, animes, tv shows just because you can't torrent them any more.

Pirates will always find a way and for many others it is the only way they watch these.

There's no direct evidence that they are behind the attacks. They never gave out methods for how they were going to subdue the piracy. So don't come to conclusions yet.

However the press release is the strongest proof that they might behind it.

Why else would someone DDoS an anime torrenting site?
