Erotic scenes in common video games?

Hello everyone,
I have to make a slight introduction on why I posted this poll. Me and a few old friends were discussing modern PC games and if / how much erotic should be included.
Some thought that it is distracting (mainly in RPG's) from the storyline, others thought it would be a good idea and finally break the taboo of no erotic scenes in common video games.
As for the definition of "common video game". I am talking about games that are released by major publishers and are in nearly every shelf of a store that features video games (Mass Effect as an example).

So I would like to ask you what you think about it. Is it rather distracting or distastefull to have an erotic scene in a video game, or do you think it just "supports realism" or adds a certain note? I for one think that as long as it is delicately handled (as in not turning into a porn game), it is a nice thing and adds a good note to it.

***I am talking about 18+ rated games of course... as most games including violence in Germany are.***

I don't really see where an erotic scene could go into an RPG, since most are aimed at young teens, and the ESRB would have a good say about that. And what few RPGs do incorporate erotic scenes into the usually end up being a full-flown porn game.

Now, you are also talking about violent games intended for adults. For that, I think some publishers should throw some erotic scenes in there. A ton of stores have really enforced that M rated games be bought with ID, so a person who is 18+ should have access to a game with an erotic scene or two in it, as long as that don't make 75% of the game erotic, or, as you said, handled with care. It could add interaction between characters easily, instead of having a subtle chat over coffee. And, of course, a touch of the real world. As we know that the real world has sex in it as well.

Well, I think it is just well done in that game. Not as "overdone" as in "The Witcher" for example where the guy basicly mutates to "The bitcher" and you wonder what the game is about.

I couldn't care less. In fact, I sometimes think they overdid it a bit with their 'delicately handling'.

For example, the campaign of Neverwinter Nights 2: I'm bootlicking my ass off for the romance scene and it goes like this:

"How about we spend the night together?"
"Ok."
Screen fades out, next thing is you find yourself in your full equipment standing in some random room. Alone.

The GoW sex scenes are funny little tidbits, and you get extra blood orbs, so it adds some gameplay in it as a mini-game, per se.

And I would prefer to see some sex in a game where all you do is play a kick-ass man constantly murdering creatures and humans in the most brutal way imaginable. It just oozes testosterone.

It's like adding comedy to a drama to liven it up.

I lol'd.

I wouldn't really care in most cases, but some games that strive to be more non-linear could use some sex scenes and romantic relations in general.
Fable, Elder Scrolls, NWE comes to mind, but most modern rpg games could have it included somewhere.
On the other hand, I wouldn't want sex to become a bigger part of the main story, unless it's about giving birth. Pleasure is pleasure, business is business.

Overall I don't really care but in some cases I would prefer it. If part of the plot is about a romance it always pisses me off that somehow between learning the ropes/having to save the princess and/or king/whatever and saving the world from dastardly evil the couple can never find the time to fuck. Nevermind that at some point you'll stay at a luxury inn or have your own airship with more than enough rooms for everyone else to be 5 rooms away from you or whatnot...somehow sex just never enters into it. Cuz we all know that sex only comes after you've solidified a relationship *rolls eyes*.

wow, it would seem that no one cares about sex scenes in common rpg games, well not that i do, i'm not a game fan myself. but i tend to play once in a while, in games like Grand Theft Auto, one can always stimulate sex with a hooker in a car or something like that, course most of it is censored, but to me it's merely a bonus touch to the game itself, as long as the game itself is not centered around hentai or sex is not the main plot, then the quality of the erotic scenes and its supposed length is otherwise expandable for gamers like me, we all just go along with it.

I like sex scenes in which you have to build a relationship first. Whether it be by mini-games(Leisure Suit Larry) or through certain dialogue (Mass Effect).

Don't care about them at all. Hell sometimes they kinda ruin some games for me when they just add them for no reason whatsoever.

Seriously, what was the point of that sex mini game in the original God of War again? I was face palming really hard when I got to that part.

Like some people, I really don't mind if there are erotic scenes in video games. However, at times erotic scenes or things can throw me off or distract me from the actual game.

Example: Guilty Gear Judgment [For the PSP]

I was playing the game for a while with different characters and finally decided to play as I-no. Although the story line in the game seems pretty simple and easy to get, I found myself more interested in her and her outfit than the actual storyline and game play. <--In that way, I was "thrown off" or distracted.

I don't know about you, but I find this outfit to be a bit sexual.. or revealing.

Hmm I had no idea that I-no was based off of Shiina Ringo until now. After reading your post, I used google to search more about it. It's pretty cool.

I could care less about explicit content in a video game. In fact, I'd accept it as part of the storyline.

I mean, it really only affects how much you like the game based on the morals by which you were raised by.

My immediate thought about this was player characters having sex in a pen and paper game which has always given me the creeps, it really doesn't help that I am in fact, so shy that if there is anyone else in the same house as me, and I'm not asleep, I am fully clothed 100% of the day, only thing I'm not wearing is shoes. Alas this is about video games too, I can accept that it doesn't really matter, I typically don't like cut scenes anyway just because I am usually playing the game to kill stuff and I wish to do so without interruption. I will admit some stories will grab my attention and I when I do care to view them I will use youtube to watch them, like Halo, Kingdom Hearts, TLOZ:Twilight Princess, and other games which have decent stories.

Well, I must say that I wouldn't like to have some kind of weird erotic scene in a game like Crysis for example either. As I said, it has to fit into the genré of the game and has to be implemented well.
I think to the largest parts, it would be limited to RPG's as mostly you play them because it is fun to see the interaction and reaction of different characters there.
Regarding GTA (dunno who stated it), I would say that is an example of a "realistic", but yet "meh" situation (admitted, I didn't play GTA IV).

I don't really care. I generally play games that involve handing out pipin' hot cases of ass-whoopin or going down the street going 80-90 mph. But you'd better be careful cause people are gonna raise a bigger stink about an overly sexual game than they ever did about an overly violent game
