This Friday, the 22nd of August, I will be leaving home on a medical mission organized by PHH (Project: Helping Hands) to various villages in Bolivia, which is a country in South America. (For those of you who aren't good with geography.) I will be gone for 2 weeks.

During my absence, I will be assisting in the establishment of a series of medical clinics in these small villages. I will be caring for sick people, young or old, male or female. I will be caring for orphans who've lost their parents (hence, orphans. \o/) and people with diseases most of us have never even heard of before.

There is minor risk, as I've been immunized for Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid Fever, Malaria, and Tetanus, as well as a few others. The only risk comes from contaminated food and water, people (thieves etc.) and regular daily hazards. I am expected to come back healthy and in one piece, should everything go as planned.

That's the Project: Helping Hands website. On the 2008 Teams tab, you will find the mission to the "Jungles of northern Bolivia." That's the mission I'm going on.

[code:1]Date: August 23 - Sept. 6, 2008

Location: Jungles of northern Bolivia

Price: $1900

Description: After nearly 10 years in the Caranavi region of Northern Bolivia, we are changing location this year for the jungle adventure trip. This year, the team will be flown into a more remote location in the jungle than we have visited in the past. This team will be involved in numerous activities including primary health care clinics in a variety of villages, health care teaching in each of the villages, public health projects in some of the villages and two day-long health care seminars to train up local health care workers.

Conditions: This will be an “extreme team”. Team members will often have to sleep on the ground or in primitive conditions. There will be no running water or electricity. The majority of travel will be by boat, we will not be using land vehicles this year. There will be extensive travel on this trip! The trip will culminate in a two day animal jungle safari.

Team Size: 30 Team members

Application Deadline: January 31, 2008

I'm not a licensed medical practitioner, so I'm just support. Building the clinic, gathering, etc.

And yeah, I payed that.

Also, no, no hitting on/screwing locals. I like my penis without STDs.

Have fun and stay safe Noutakun. :)

The experience, and possibly knowledge, gained during this medical mission is not something that can be valued in monetary terms. Good luck, have fun in the various activities even though they may not seem like it to commoners and most importantly, may you return safe and sound.
