Serious Moe Discussion.

0
Now before people start to ream me or anything of the sort let me make this clear:
THIS IS A SERIOUS QUESTION AND I WANT SERIOUS ANSWERS!!!!!!!!

The question up for discussion is What exactly is Moe?

I have a pretty good idea of moe myself (So dont let me see "You're Noob Comments"), but one of my female friends (who I am secretly moe training) wants to know exactly what moe is. I couldn't really tell her so I am seeking help, so i can sit her down and have a full 2-3 hour long discussion on why she is moe and how her glasses look better than her contacts. lol

Moe (萌え?, /mo.e/, pronounced "mo-eh" literally "budding", as with a plant) is a Japanese slang word originally referring to fetish or love for characters in video games or anime and manga. For example, 眼鏡っ娘萌え, meganekko-moe, "glasses-girl moe", describes a person who is attracted to fictional characters with eyeglasses. "Moe!" is also used within anime fandom as an interjection referring to a character the speaker considers to be a moekko. It is even used in some anime, such as Ouran High School Host Club, Lucky Star, Kaichou-wa Maid-sama!, K-ON, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. There are various interpretations of what moe is today. While some argue that moe is a pure, protective feeling towards a character[1], popular use denotes moe as an adjective used to describe any features of a character that particularly "turn on" the person, sexually or otherwise.[2] The expanded use of the word has led to it being used to describe anything "hyper-cute" as well, such as the genre of anime-inspired music unique to Akihabara. - wiki

now that you know about it, it's also important for you to know the elements of moe.. I'll explain shortly about them..

1. Tsundere
Which is the most popular element of moe.. Tsundere is the short term of Tsuntsunderedere, where tsuntsun means to act cold to others, and deredere means to act kind and sweet to others. This type of characters usually gone all cold at first, but as the story goes, they'll become sweet and cute.

There are a lot examples of this type, but I'll name Louise De La Valiere (Zero no Tsukaima) as the prime example.

Although the title of this thread has the word "Serious" in it, I am still pondering whether or not to move the topic to another section. The only reason why I have not done so would be my inability to identify which section would be most appropriate, thus I am leaving the thread here to see how things turn out. :)

That I agree is the embodiment of moe. "Oni-chan~!"

Though seriously, Shinichi Miyamoto gave one helluva excellent post on what moe is and what it can classify into. Remind me to +rep you because you deserve.

Another interesting link regarding "Kawaii" in Japanese culture, which would explain the origins of moe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuteness_in_Japanese_culture

I do not in any way claim to be some sort of manga/anime/hentai expert, nor am I a 100% native Japanese speaker (though I do consider myself very close to that level now), but if you want an all-encompassing definition, I've always thought "moe" to be that intense emotional feeling that floods you; kind of like how your heart fluttered and you got all hot when you saw your crush during middle/high school. Therefore, anything that gives you that feeling, you can call moe. The wide application of "moe" and the ensuing confusion, I think, is due to the fact that this intense "crush" feeling can be triggered by so many different ways, and along the way we somehow lost track of what it originally was.

A current example? The epitome of moe in current anime for me would be Mio from K-ON. I do think they're perhaps overdoing it, but there's no doubt that Mio's pushing all the right buttons to qualify as "Saimoe" (most moe).

Of course, if I'm in any way wrong feel free to correct me. We all learn from mistakes.

Here's an example of Raze's explanation. When I think of "Moe~" it's means like enough, it's so intense that you get a nosebleed.

Yup, when you think it's so cute you just want to hug it and keep it to yourself and never let anybody else touch it (in a matter of speaking); thats moe. And usually, moe can also be associated with hentai. You guys know what I mean, you dirty minds.

Here's a good example:

Also: there doesn't seem to be much room for discussion, If I were you I would move it to random.
