The combination of humanity and the ability to speak with total anonymity has the interesting effect of turning a normal, sane, rational person into a total and complete douchebag. what's up with that?

The internet brings out a person's true color.

Because in the internet, nobody can beat you up for insulting someone.
0
because your behind the screen and no one can touch you, and no one will really ever know who you are so if you screw up, you can just leave.

Lies!

Don't make me go Jay & Silent Bob on your ass!

Well, I think we all have been a douche bag on the internet for at least once...And there's also some moments where you can't really see the person's true intentions through posting, it makes for some severe misunderstandings which will very rapidly become flamewars.

And trolling is a waste of time, however you look at it >_> You might get a few responses, but all in all, you haven't accomplished anything in the long run. I don't even know why it's fun, it's embarrassing. But then again, anonimity strikes again...

I've never been a Douchebag on the internet, I just try to be myself. I believe how ever you one acts anywhere is a reflection of who one truly is. So my personality here is how I act in real life, silly almost all the time but serious when it comes to love and serious things. Although I do like to joke around and tease females alot, which is why Hydrocortisone hates me.

Ditto. Well except I don't even know who Hydrocortisone is so I doubt she hates me.

@Waar: oh shut it.

It's not a theory, it was a personal belief, DOUCHEBAG!

In the day to day life people are self conscious, fearful, etc of what others think about them. So we stifle our deeper feelings and thoughts to keep our asses out of trouble.

Though it still is a smart move to not say "nigger" in a real life conversation with a black person.

I thought that the OP was making an obvious 4chan reference also.

I love internet anonymity and the freedom it grants. Normally, there are rather strict limits to how much one individual can expand, within a community. Now on the internet, I can be a somewhat happy Fakker around here, while I play Christian on some religious forum.
Anonymity is a wonderful thing in that sense, while I was more political active, I was somewhat active in both a liberal and socialistic community. I have also been a female on some rare occasion. These explorations have helped me to expand more than what is normally possible for a single person.
And I don't think people behave like assholes on the internet, nor that they fake. It's just diffrent aspects of the self that everyone has, but is forced to restrict due to their own image of identity and others image of them.

Not that any of this ever made me happy, it just means that in the end I didn't care anymore about politics, every system works as long as people are indifferent or happy about it. I also think the none-anonymous life is rather dull. Same goes for everything I've gotten to know to well, it gets boring.
Anonymity combined with the curiousity of a human could very well be the first step towards global consciousness. Everyone has the same accessed information, everyone has the same set of roles, everyone is more or less the same. I like it nevertheless.

I try to be a nice guy both off- and online, because whether you're insulted verbally or through a screen, what you feel is the same.

However, this rule is kinda suspended when hanging out at ebaumsworld....

Yeah that's all good and shit.
But being a douchebag in person is much more beneficially. Take it from me.

Admittedly this poster is about /b/ but it is close enough to the subject at hand. Forum Image: http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll196/Kais86/bisinternetsuperheros.jpg
You may have to squint... sorry.

...lol, jk, im an ass in rl but not rly here XD but srsly, since people who couldnt normally be a jerk can without repercussions, they tend to as it gives them a rush/feeling of power. its just as simple as that, humans love power. lol

I don't understand why you would want to be another person on the Net. You don't gain anything from it.
