Why is Human life considered precious?

I've read what you all wrote. Something I appreaciate, something I loathe. I tell this of mine: human life is precious because you never know what you can expect from a human, plus if it has been said for long that for a peaceful life we simply need to tolerate each other, it means that human life has to be tolerated as an identity itself, a embodied thought.

I think it is due to our natural inclinations to form connections. Whether they be tangible things such as another human or an intangible such as power, we strive to keep those connections alive. In the case of a predator appearing in nature, we are inclined to destroy it because it damages the connection humans have to the power to "rule the world."

In a case of a predator on say a romantic relationship such as a cultural barrier, both members of the relationship would normally avoid or remove such a predator because it threatens that relation. Human life is precious because we cannot build connections without other humans and no human truly wants to live in a world devoid of those connections. Due to this we emphasize human life and regard it as precious.

We consider human life as precious due to some sort of crazy egocentrical ideas.
But I think we should consider human life just as precious as any others life.
I am being hypocritical with that, because I eat lots of meat, but I still think that all the other creatures around us have their right of life too.
If only meat weren't so tasty. :(

Its not precious. Everyone dies. life that simple.

When I saw page 2, I guess that's a brief explanation why we are precious.

Because we, human, have wisdom and power to lead the world.

But, indeed, our greediness bring destruction too.

Most of us (human) are just greedy, but their life is ant workers' life.
Many of us are greedy and living in a good life, but don't care of others.
Some of us are greedy, living luxuriously, and don't care about others, just living like a king and never satisfied of their possesion.
A small portion are just other ant workers, but even in their hard living life, they want to help other even just a little, but not as smart to help our environtment.
a little living peacefully and helping others and the environtment...
a few can and willing to help us helping us and the environtment.

Even our tiniest wings can change the other world, but only a few think of this and just living this life as it flows to death.

Life is precious if we can appreciate it and think how we can make it a better world, and defeat our greed to life, even better if you have enough resources to help others (and we'll need greed and effort first, for this).

I believe this is because -

1. We humans are the dominant species on Earth and thus for a human, a human life should always hold more value than any other form of life.

2. The value of a human life is determined by the choice he makes and actions. Thus the full potential of human life cannot be realised until it has ended.

I think it's considered precious for 3 main reasons (which may have already been said):
1) We're arrogant. We are smarter than the other animals, better able to adapt by manipulating our surroundings, and able to literally destroy the world at the press of a button. We're drunk with power, and so we think ourselves high and mighty and in need of preservation.
2) It's instinct. We are all born with a sense of self-preservation (most of us anyway) and we can extend that sense to the community we belong to, which can include all of humanity.
3) Life is short. This has less to do with ourselves and more to do with the nature of all life. It is a more philosophical reason. Because life is so short, but long enough to accomplish something meaningful, it has value. Because we can remember and learn and interact with each other and miss something when it's gone, life is given value by us.

Humans are able to do so much, we can be one of lifes greatest species but also the worst, we can create medicine and technology to help people survive and make society flourish, but we can also destroy through wars and genocide. I think it all comes down to good and bad, not every human is a bad person, but not every human is a good person either. Plus if you tell a dog or a cat to rule a city things might not go well

Universally speaking, one can view all existence, specifically Earth, as a coincidence (chance/luck) or fate (happening for a reason/destiny). Earth is the perfect distance from the Sun, where it is able to retain a fairly stable atmosphere and liquid water. Thus, creating ideal conditions for life (as we know it) to propagate on Earth. There are so many instants were humans wouldn't even exist, such as Earth surviving a mass extinction from a giant meteor. What if humans didn't evolve and just stayed as their genetic ancestors, but instead I don't know maybe giraffes became "human". So let's back up to the question of coincidence and fate. Is everything all just an accident, or is there an invisible hand (a god if you will) controlling space and time? Reasoning for coincidence would probably make this discussion invalid because all life would be equal. On the other hand, a person reasoning for fate would suggest that this "superior being" favors "us" over "them", and here is the beginnings of narcissism. In the Iliad, Achilles chooses everlasting glory, which he never physically claims over living out his life in peace. Narcissism is our nature, and we're not going to change. However, not everyone believes in this. After all, what's a god to a non-believer?

You should totally read or watch Animal Farm (1954), I think you'll gain more insight. Maybe listen to the 70s Pink Floyd albums or Radiohead's OK Computer.

I like to think it's because we're pretentious bastards. Also, I don't find human life very important, really. I find material possessions more important. Does this make me shallow? Maybe.

However, say there's a house burning down with my Zelda collection in it. On the other side of the street a little girl is about to get hit by a fire truck. Which do I try to save? The Zelda collection, fuck the girl. That, and someone else will probably grab her anyway.

Hmm... I may be the only pretentious bastard here.

Wow, I was a dick four years ago. This post is also a bit prophetic in that my house did indeed burn down a few months ago. My Zelda collection is safe, however. Except my collector's edition of Skyward Sword got some water damage.

Sorry about the off topic post. I guess I'd say that I disagree with my old post. I was still a teenager when I wrote that.

Because humans are smarter. (but some are ignorant.)

To quote the story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, better known in movie form as Blade Runner, humans feel empathy. While it is true that rats can also feel empathy, life in other humans reflects our own lives. When we see someone else's life end unexpectedly for whatever reason, we can be empathetic and take a small glimpse at our own end. No one necessarily wishes for their own end, ergo, we make human life precious.

All animals, especially the social ones, value others of their own species over the lives of others. This is not always so as some animals will care for one of another species but if given a choice many will save one of their own over the other, especially if they are very close. The natural instinct is to ensure the survival of the species and with social animals this drive leads them to protect others like them. The more solitary animals will harm or even kill competition, but those that live in groups must stick together for survival. Safety in numbers to quote a cliche.

I think any life is precious, if only because a flick of the wrist can end it.

The selfish gene, it's a theory that we live to prolong the gene's life bassicly, it's a theory by R.dawkings,or the reason life is considered precious is so the human gene/existence/life etc.. doesn't get extinct.

Human narcissism at its finest. Simple words yet explains why.

As human, we can change the world with our hands.

That's because we're smarter and can communicate. That's the only reason why we're considered more superior to animals, demons, etc. We also have control over ourselves which most creatures don't have. I mean if it wasn't for society I think everyone would do whatever they want. We'd be like animal packs trying to hunt and eat each other lol. Actually I think that's way off.

Why, because were alive. since people constantly die around us, this makes us believe that our lives are more precious than what they really are. to me a life is a life therefore its just there. we cant explain why we are born or how it is that we got the lives that we got. but maybe its because of self interest.
