Very sad news from Redmond, Wash. Melissa Batten, 36, a software development engineer in Microsoft's Xbox division, was murdered by her estranged husband, who then shot himself to death, earlier this week.

Batten, a Harvard-educated lawyer, was a Software Development Engineer in Test for Microsoft, supporting Rare on its 360 titles work. She had worked for Microsoft since 2002, earning credits in Halo 3 and Gears of War as an SDET. Earlier, as a lawyer, she had been a public defender for the Mecklenburg County (Charlotte, N.C.) Public Defender's Office.

Her husband, Joseph Batten, was also 36. He had also worked for Microsoft but most recently worked for Wizards of the Coast, publisher of hobby games such as Magic: the Gathering. Melissa had obtained a restraining order against her husband on July 21. Another news story describes Joseph Batten as obsessive and verbally abusive, and when she learned he had obtained a handgun, she sought the protection order.

Obviously, we should ban the Xbox and sue Microsoft for morality damages.

Obviously, we should also encourage the use of restraining orders, since it's not retarded at all and a very reliable deterrent when things are getting serious.

She sought a restraining order. Like that actually does anything. Now, if the restraining order was a force field and the person with the restraining order physically couldn't go within the required distance. That would be awesome.

Since we're not that awesome, I believe a good ole fashioned 12 gauge is the only real "restraining order"

Xbox took a bad blow with this one... If only those little pieces of paper could stop bullets like in "The Matrix", THEN it would not be a clomplete waste of time :D

What the fuck.
Wow, how the hell do you get so obsessed over something that you kill it, then kill yourself?

rest in peace guys :|

Bad things like that happen all the time. Women should get themselves a good man from the start and that will solve any restraining order problems.

Because it's clearly obvious who the good and bad men are at all times.

hmm... a good point you make. but, some people do not wish to own guns because it is as good a protection as it is a hazard.

i look for hentai on the internet, why cant i look for compassion!? ill fucking compassion you... to death...

it just really sucks, i dont like when the benefits of a death are considered before the deceased themselves. really shows the mentality of the species and how we have everything we need to live comfortably, no more evolving for us!

bleh, its not like any members of that family will be visiting us soon to read your kind words; it's almost like you have a misplaced sense of empathy because it's considered a social norm. I understand feeling bad for someone but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to request someone else share your values over the internet. Not that I care...

It's like saying "My Dog died and I want somebody to cry with even if I don't know you."

Something like that.

Remember, it's funny if it didn't happen to you.

Yeah that's also one thing.

Also as confucius say:

Don't do to others so that others won't do unto you.

Also somebody did say:

Do to others before others do unto you.

Sorry for maybe sounding harsh, but what's so special about it? It is not like the "setup" of what happened is new. And "just" because it is the life of a publisher of Microsoft it becomes special? Meh.
For a nation where obtaining fire arms is as easy as in the US, it comes at the price of things like this happening more often. Old causality law. Nothing comes without a consequence.
