Dark Souls II

Also, is anybody else dual wielding? I've been playing the whole game with dual wielding and sorcery. Currently using a pair of Falchions.

My main weapon is a lightning halberd so I maxed it out but I might reallocate my points in a new game+ and dual wield from there. Twinblades are really fun to use, animation is sick and you can show-off online, exchange the dragon rider soul to get one.

I'm at the drangleic castle and I'm realizing the game doesn't fuck around anymore.

EDIT:

Final boss dealt with, probably going to farm some dragon charms and get that lovely armor as a result before considering either making a new character or going NG+.

The real faggots are those who cast an exploding fireball while you're still being summoned. Then there are the secondary faggots who attack you while you greet them. They're not even trolling, they're being real assholes. Do not underestimate the art of trolling in Dark Souls.

Protip for anyone who likes to do honor battles: Don't worry about honor battling for the first month or so of Dark Souls 2 release - that is when all the newfigs start playing.
After a month or so, they'll leave and the actual pvp can start.

Edit - Why is the Mirror Knight called "Looking Glass Knight" in game.

Because that is what a mirror would be.

So there is a collectors edition for the PC version, so whatever I said about the figure is moot. The only thing PS3/Xbox players have over PC is being able to play the game sooner. I'll probably get the pc version if it ever goes on sale.

Though tbh I enjoy playing games on a tv more, it's more of a personal thing.

But back on topic I have to say like in the original Dark Souls there is a lot of cryptic nonsense that you kind of have to know. LIke how illusory walls no longer require you to hit them, how the weapon repair system works, how you get natural poise, etc. I don't really mind, but since wiki's aren't updated that well I'm not sure what kind of weapons I should upgrade which would give me the most damage so I've already beaten one of the 4 main bosses and haven't upgraded any of my weapons yet. Hopefully there is a merchant with an unlimited number of titanite shards because I don't want to upgrade a weapon I stop using and then run out of shards. I might use the greatsword since I'm going mainly strength build but since I upgraded dex already I might use a curved greatsword.

End game you can upgrade common weapons at will. Praise the stone merchant.

Death count: 42

I love being able to tackle bosses on other peoples' runs so I can see their pattern before I attempt it myself, and I also love how you don't really have a soul penalty for inviting others to help you out. Protip: that armor set you find after beating the second boss is just so good... but you need to dump points in weight load early if you roll as an OHSHIT instinct like me, haha. :P

But seriously, those 3 knights bosses, fuck 'em...

Got an idea just recently. In arena PVP I pop up a silver talisman. Gives me a slight advantage at the start as the opponent has little time to react to your first attack (most efficient attack so far has been halberd spin). They can't lock-on onto me while I'm transformed and the best of all: ennemy homing spells that proc when you get close DON'T proc.

Dat poison valley...

Is there any way to clear the poison or do you just have to trudge through it and constantly heal?

On a side note, i made myself have 17 strength so I could use the black knight halberd and then realized later that it scales with magic as well as dex.

I'm doing a dex/faith build. dammit. I already used a soul level reset too.

I've been rolling with the black knight halberd for as long as I can remember, best halberd for dexterity afaik. There's a pyromancy spell in NG+ that allow you to fire enchant it and make it even more powerful. Without forgetting to infuse it with fire via the blacksmith!

Spoiler:

yea i saw that video. stunlocking is a lot more important in pvp now, even more so than in the original dks. gonna have to look into that.
since i dont have any magic i guess i should switch to maybe Falchion since it's the only other weapon i have other than claws that have a B in dex. i might just use a boss weapon if there is a better scaling one.

also, fuck those gargoyles. i mean it's already enough that you have to kill all 6 statues but having to fight all 3 at the same time is such a pain in the ass. if there is one thing i have to complain about in dark souls 2 is that the bosses seem a little unbalanced. some bosses are ridiculously easy, others are just plain cheap.

The spin move leaves you open as fuck if you miss though. I can usually dodge it but sometimes the second or third strike will get me if I'm not careful.

On another note, I hate how every fucking faggot tries to jump attack you in that one pvp map with the upper level. It never works either, it's just annoying. I also hate how people use gestures when they win lag fights.

I just got the game a few days ago. I was having a really hard time, especially around those turtle MFs. The difficulty felt unfair (coming from someone who's played the first 2 games in the series), and I was getting frustrated to the point that I was about to have an outbreak. A while later when I was checking up the different covenants online, I realised I had joined the Company of Champions for some reason, which increases the game's difficulty similar to NG+ (only I was still SL20). I noticed there's also a ring that increases the aggro range (sort of like Aggression mod on the PC), in addition to the bonfire ascetics, so all in all there seems to be plenty of options for hardcore players.

Other than that I'm enjoying the game, although the low framerate and it's dips in certain areas is somewhat annoying (PS3). I will be getting the PC version in April for sure, everything is so much smoother in 60FPS+, even the controls feel more responsive. I'm not even sure if the clunkyness of the controls I'm experiencing is due to the low framerate or if they've consciously added more weight to the attacks and movement this time around.

I really like how they've nerfed the invincibility frames of the rolls, feels like the timing has to be more spot on compared to DS1, all the while as it still works for properly avoiding attacks (and not just rolling through them). I think I'm gonna enjoy the PVP a lot more this time around. Not sure I like increased stunlocking/reduced poise compared to DS1 though, but that might grow on me.

Edit: so skilling up adaptability makes rolling even easier than in DS1? It also removes the "weight" of the attacks as it allows you to pull up your shield sooner after attacking, lol.

The best advice for Harvest Valley (poison clouds) is to just let the poison outbreak, then pop a Lifestone as your HP drops. You can kind of offset the drain this way, and you don't 'stack' poison while you're in the cloud, so all you gotta worry about are enemies. The same goes for Black Gulch, honestly.

I'm at like 71 deaths. ;-; Has anyone done some Blue Sentinel or Blood Bro sparring?

I'm gonna go on a little rant of the game, if no one minds.
Full of spoilers, I mainly use late game stuff as my examples.
Spoiler:
This game ultimately failed.

Bosses

In Souls 1 (I'm just talking about Dark Souls 1 and Dark Souls 2), On my first play through, I never beat any bosses on my first try.
In Souls 2, I beat well over half of the bosses on my first try.

Most of the bosses were just straight up bullshit: specifically the Throne Watcher and Defender.
It's a 2V1, and they can heal each other to full health. Who the fuck thought it would be a good idea for 2 bosses with high as shit poise to be able to heal each other to full health.

The Lost Sinner, The Rotten, Velstadt, and the Chariot bosses were fucking awesome. I'd say they were the only good bosses in the entire game.

The Medusa boss: If you don't set the windmill on fire, her room is full of poison. Cool idea. Problem: the windmill of made of fucking STONE.
I remember going to that windmill, smacking it, and the turning away 2 times. There was absolutely no indication that I could set it on fire- no dry plants, no oil, NO INDICATION at all!

Making a boss fight with multiple bosses doesn't make the hard. It makes it literally unfair.
The game is unfortunately full of 2V1's - and some cases, 3V1's.

SIMPLE FIX: Make it so instead of 3 Ruin Sentinels, make it 1 Sentinel, and a Sentinel Elite. After the normal one dies, the Elite jumps in.
Why the fuck didn't they do this?!?

Dual wielding

They added a new mechanic: when you have 2 weapons of the same weapon class on both hands and you hold the 2 hand button, you can attack with both weapons at the same time.

Problem: it's either not worth it, the move set poor, or it barely gives a benefit to make it useable.
With 2 daggers, the strong attack is a... Well strong attack that uses both blades.
Why not have a flurry of stabs with both blades, there is a ring that makes it so poise goes down that every hit, and you could put poison on the blades. If that were the case, I would've done that through the entire game. But no.

multiple weapon classes have the same move set when their dual wielded. So why even make them dual wield-able?

Level design

Some areas were fucking beautiful. But the level design can be easily exploited.

Take the Shrine of Dragons for instance. The level design is across that entire area is: a flat platform, with 2 enemies at the same time. And they're coded so that if 1 agros, they both do.
Editfix- meaning the entire area is unavoidably full of that '2V1' bullshit.

In the Shrine of Amana: There are multiple enemies who shoot homing magic. and they're placed so that if you walk up and slash one, another far off agros on you.
Causing you to slowly pick every mage off with a bow and arrow. 10/10 level design.

It felt like the entire game could be exploited with a bow and arrow.

Some of the puzzles, you straight up have to look up a guide.
I already mention the windmill bullshit, but there are some others.

The Ashen Mist. No where does it mention- or even hint that you're supposed to use it on the dead giants.
The fight with Hollow King Vendrick - no where does it say- OR EVEN HINT that the souls of dead giants are used to weaken Vendrick's defense.

Spoiler free tl;dr: Dark Souls 2 did some things right, and a LOT of things wrong. And the things it did do right weren't explored to their fullest potential.

I havent beaten the game yet, though you do raise some good points.
Spoiler:
A lot of the bosses in the original dark souls did seem unfair, but only at first. the gargoyle boss was really annoying, but you could exploit it's tail weakness and the second one only drops down after the first is at half health.
the gargoyle in dark souls 2 you have to fight both at once and then third one comes in like a minute or two.
and then there's really dumb "bosses" like the Skeleton King or Royal Rat Vanguard. I actually got poisoned and died after I beat the rat vanguard, and it didn't count somehow so I had to re-fight them. it even said victory achieved but it apparently doesn't count unless you can get the boss soul.

also the weapon degradation system is meh. it gives a sense of urgency but i don't think weapon durability should be that big a part of the game. especially since it either forces you to have the Bracing Knuckle ring or multiple copies of the same weapon just in case one breaks while you're traveling.

overall you can tell it was by a different director, and while they did improve on a lot of things (such as rebalancing dark magic, dual wielding, backstabbing) I would probably say the first one is better.
