This is a guide for the people new to the world of visual novels and eroge. To help you get off to a good start, Fakku gives you this list of Must-Play titles.

Consideration about the visual novels included on this list was taken from the Fakku Top 10 v2.0 thread. Feel free to post your top 10 visual novels there.

This list will have these characteristics:

 • Since the majority of Fakku userbase can't read japanese, this list will only contain translated visual novels. Additionally, only fully translated visual novels will be considered.

 • If a visual novel has a prequel / sequel and only one of them is translated / released, it won't be considered. Exceptions may eventually be applied. If a visual novel had a second release with different content and only the first is translated, the first release will be considered. In the case of OELVNs (Original English Language Visual Novel), only fully released visual novels will be considered.

 • This list will be ordered alphabetically. Visual novels that have a prequel / sequel will take priority in the list. Therefore, the order of this list doesn't mean that a determined visual novel is better / worst than other visual novel.

 • Due to dead links, on a first stage, this list won't mention similar visual novels to the ones recommended. However, this list will have a "Special Mentions" section. You'll find it at the end of the main list.

 • To make this thread simple to navigate through and to not clutter the page, the main list will only include the cover / other kind of image related to the visual novel, a link to VNDB (Visual Novel Database) and a link to the post / thread to download the visual novel. The "Special Mentions" section will only include a link to VNDB and other link to the post / thread to download the visual novel.

Nice Starting Line Up for people who are new to Visual Novels they will surely crave for more...+ Rep

Might be just me, but I think Katawa Shoujo should be at least in the honorable mentions, if not for the great story and wonderful characters, for it being western made and the easiest VN to install and play, and of course free.

Katawa Shoujo was considered but for now at least, it won't be included.
It's true that Katawa Shoujo is very popular among the english community and even more because it's western made, but it's overall quality and experience is surpassed by a lot of other VNs. More and more VNs get translated / released and unfortunately, not all of them can be included in the list.

Given that it's western made I'll give a bit more of thought regarding Katawa Shoujo.

Also, as I said in the first post, there are VNs with dead links so as some of them are re-uploaded, some will probably be included.

I agree with Shardik. Katawa Shoujo should be placed in Honorable Mentions, simply for the fact that there's scarcely any VNs originating from the western communities.

Unfortunately I'll have to disagree. If the actual game was as high quality as the demo KS Act 1 had been then yes definitely, but it wasn't, with exception to Rin's for being truly unique and least awkward (A million praises to Aura). Even the recently published Dysfunctional Systems Episode 1 by Dischan has far more credibility to be in the honorable mentions than KS, if not for the fact that amorim doesn't want to post a not fully-released VN.

I am so proud that I'm an avid fan of Ryukishi07's works and all of it made it to the Recommended Titles. I almost cried tears of joy.

Anyway, thank you for updating the lists.

I know this is not the place to say this, but I might as well state it, since I have already made this post. If you liked Yume Miru Kusuri, you may also consider playing Family Project ~ Kazoku Keikaku ~. They both have this same atmosphere and slice of life. Moreover, it was written by Yamada Hajime, acclaimed author of Kana ~Little Sister~ and Yume Miru Kusuri. At the same line, despite having a different author, Snow Sakura is pretty comedic and has this tearjerker scenes, as well.

If the criteria were based solely on presentation, then I wouldn't consider KS. I agree the quality of KS isn't consistent throughout, but my position is that it would be prudent to expose people to VNs originating elsewhere. Prudent, because it shows what types of VNs are originating outside of their main territory of Japan.

According to your statement, you seem to be misunderstanding this thread objective.
The main objective of this thread is to give a list of titles that can provide a pretty good experience and to keep it simple.

Therefore, consideration is mainly focused on the overall experience and not on showing what types of VNs are developed outside Japan. That's something that people new to VNs will eventually learn.

I see your point but once again, unrelated to this thread objective.

glad to see that the recommends thread updated. If I may ask, are the listed visual novels listed in any particular order? Like the most popular first or something?

No. They're ordered alphabetically.
I explain this list characteristics on the first post.

Just wondering why Dainbanchou-BBA & Kamidori didn't get special mentions.

Welp i'm not into "serious VNs" lately hahaha but still GJ amorim

Kamidori doesn't deserve a mention, period.

For BBA, it IS a little too old of a game, and it WAS mentioned before in the previous Recommends. Besides there are many, many conflicting reviews on BBA (I personally find it absolutely entertaining - with a walkthrough - but).

I'm several days late on seeing this list, but no lie. It's pretty much the list I made so I'm happy to see all the titles up here.

Might be just me, but would anyone else feel like there should be a link to the 1.0 thread on the front page?

If anything I feel like this is simply an extension to the already named, already recognized titles, to show those new to the VN section would have a wider selection to chose from.

This list of recommendations is a replacement to the original one.
As I'm sure you noticed, the original list is outdated due to some factors such as dead links and more recent VNs that completely outrank the ones mentioned in it.

Also, I cover in the end of the recommendations the fact that the list will be updated further and encourage users to proactively search for VNs that fit their tastes using VNDB.

Nonetheless, I actually like the idea of at least mentioning the previous list and how this list will replace it so I'll give it a bit of thought.

I see Tsukihime there. Good.

Is there any "feel good" titles that you recommend?
