No Nintendo handheld has ever been compatible with games from two generations before. I wouldn't expect this, especially after GBA support was removed even from the DSi. Well, still probably getting this one, though. If I need to play GBA games, there's still my DS Lite.

I guess they finally realized how much of a failure the DSi XL is.

As expected, the level of ignorance in this thread is high. Just because it's 3D-capable doesn't mean every game made for it will use it.

True, but if they're going to pitch it primarily as a 3D handheld, as they seem to be atm, then the vast majority of titles will need to utilise that. Otherwise they would surely have focused on graphics etc. in the press release, and rather mentioned the 3D capability as an exciting facet or possibility of that. Of course if the focus is on 3D, then regardless of the options available to developers the flagship Ninty titles (most of the best DS franchises) will have to use it, which is a pretty big deal.

True, true, but I'm thinking more long-term. We can expect massive amounts of shitty 3D-utilizing games at the start, but by the end there will be a few games that utilize it really well and everything else will be traditional as far as gaming goes.

So you know you're gonna prefer the old DS over the 3DS before it's out or even shown?

That's smart.

We'll see... The problem will be the same as with the Wii - if you don't use the new features available to you, you'll get worse reviews from the press. So everyone will, of course, try to use them, no matter how well they can, just to avoid being called something even worse. Even when the game might actually be better with a more traditional style.

You know, I actually see more of the "they shouldn't of implemented (insert feature here) if it was going to suck so bad" comments in reviews rather than the "it would have been better if (insert feature here) had been utilized (more)" (at least with the DS). You don't see too many DS reviews where people complain about how there was absolutely no touch screen. No one complains about how pretty much no one uses the microphone. I would dare say that even most DS games don't utilize the two screens to their fullest, yet very few complaints are levied against them (in that regard). There probably will be some complaints about games that don't utilize the 3D feature early on, but in the long run, such complaints will wind up being few and far between.

I agree with this, do not use a feature if you can't use it properly. Otherwise it's going to the shitter without a single of hope of seeing light or for this case a possitive review.

But I must say if companies would make games that don't use the new 3D feature it's like never making the console in the first place since we already have the DS for that. And I'm not sure fans would like the idea of having bought the same console twice just because the new one functions similar to their old one because its features are nerfed thanks to the games.

Except the tentatively named 3DS is going to be a new handheld, not a new iteration. So you can expect the usual "better graphics" upgrade and maybe, just maybe, an analogue stick/nub/whatever and higher resolution displays ... maybe. But hey, a lot of DS games got away with not using the touch screen/mic/etc. as I said before, so the same will probably happen with the 3DS. If anything, this emphasis on 3D is more of a PR/marketing tactic than anything else.

similar to the OP pic, this game will prolly hurt my eyes =_=

seems this will be a review heavy console. much liek my transition from GBA>NDS, i prolly won't get this upon release and wait a couple of years before i jump shift. i've been sitting on my DSlite since late 2007 and will continue to do so until i find favorable reasoning why i should.

most games have gotten away w/o using mic or touchscreen but all NDS games have used both screens visually. that is a fact.
