This is weird to me. Like, I'm not opposed per se, but there are others I'd prefer over him.

I wouldn't really say it's surprising. I mean he is Namco's mascot and it's going to be fun having Sonic, Mario, him and Mega Man go at it. My choice would be Jude or Ludger from the two Tales of Xillia games but I'm fine with this.

I love how he looks! They used the Namco Mario Kart Arcade model!!!!

... in a game filled with world-wide known mascots that best represent gaming as a whole... you're gonna use the two newest characters off a comparatively niche JRPG franchise? If you had to represent Namco Bandai with a Tales of character (and really, that's a bad decision to make anyway, compared to choosing a real mascot like Pacman), why not go for an older, more recognizable face? Like Lloyd or Luke, or maybe even Kratos.

So the folks at melee on it on me did an "impressions" page based on the Invitational and a off the live demos at E3.

http://meleeiton.me/2014/06/10/invitational-impressions/

Noticeable things that I feel are important.
- L-Cancel – doesn’t seem to be in
- Wavedashing – Definitely no
- Delay after throwing someone. Really hard to follow up
- No grab release infinites
- Dashing Crouch Cancel None
- Dash dancing is impossible
- Crouching to cancel dashing is impossible
- Dashing is really questionable in this game
- DI is somewhat noticeable

The game is a few months away and things can change, but I don't see it as very likely. I also think that there needs to be more time to fully examine the game, but I can't help but feel Sakurai won't budge on a lot of these things, and those feelings are reinforced by his answers at the Smash round table event.

Things like hitstun returning and tripping being dropped is well and all but it needs more than that to be both fun and technical.

After watching the games for the invitational, I for one am still mildly interested in playing this new Smash. Yeah, it still doesn't have the Melee mechanics that I loved, but hey, it's a new game, and I'll try it out before I write it off as a good or bad game.

Sakurai unfortunately doesn't want to cater to the competitive players, and create a game that's more suitable for casuals, so this is what we get. I understand why a lot of the competitive Melee players get butt-hurt, but they've got to understand that unfortunately Sakurai is again, making it more suitable for casuals.

If anything, I'm pretty sure someone down the road will make another version of Project M for this upcoming game, and make it competitive enough to see play.

I don't understand this mentality. It's not impossible to make a decently balanced game with a high skill ceiling that doesn't isolate casuals. I don't remember people being turned off by Melee when it came out, even as most things in the meta game became established, only a few people had a problem with is and that's because they're under the impression that things like L-cancelling is a glitch even though it was fully intended to be in the game. I know he can't take in every idea that's thrown at him, but his "If you're not a chef you can't criticize food" mentality is not only insulting, but dumb.

I think the people who made the tiers were a bit too hasty since the game isn't out yet but noticing that a lot of mechanics didn't return is a tinge bit disappointing, this coming from a guy who has never played in a tournament and just appreciates the "Sandbox" elements of the game.

People will still have fun with this even if it's not as complex as a certain other title, even those who like playing with a higher skill ceiling will more than likely play it, it's just frustrating to know that the game is a couple of tweaks from isolating less people.

Besides, Greninja's in. I'd rather have him than Mewtwo anyway. I don't have a problem with using older characters but I'd just want some fresh faces. Hell, if it wasn't for Marth and Roy getting in Melee we probably wouldn't have had Fire Emblem get as big in the states as it did pre-Awakening. It might actually get people to play the games if they're implimented well enough.

I understand how you feel. Myself along with all of my friends that got me into playing Melee again and Project M are also quite salty about this. But unfortunately, our voice for having stuff like Melee mechanics are very minuscule compared to the masses of other players that just play this game for fun.

There is no reason to not create a game that has depth for the people who are willing to put time into this game but easy to pick up and learn for the casual gamers. I guess that's how Sakurai rolls though. :\

This is why I still stick to my USFIV.

Back from Best Buy after waiting in a huge line to play the new Smash. Have to say it's pretty damn awesome. Only got to play for 2 minutes but was really fun. Even more hyped now.

Best part of the whole tournament.

Rosalina took one for the team to keep the hype going.

Guys, we all knew this wasn't going to be as competitive as you all wanted. The mere fact that Sakurai has always considered this a party game first says it all. People looking for Melee 2.0 were always bound to be dissapointed no matter what. Also, no one has had any serious extensive time with the game at all so the competitive viability talk is still too early. I'm sure stuff like wavedashing wasn't found in Melee on the first day. I do have to say all the doom and gloom over at Smashboards is a joy to read.

Anyways, you guys should be getting hyped for the little things at this point. For example, the fan service in Smash Run is off the chart. So many cameos and nods you have no choice but to smile. Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the few that still gets hyped by the gigantic amount of nostalgia invoking fanservice, which is what brought everyone to the series in the first place.

I probably won't be playing this competitive anyway: Already had a similar experience with Persona 4 Arena with some friends and..yeah. I might learn a couple of advanced techniques but I won't treat it like I do Marvel or Blazblue.

Anyway, those Amiibo figures...I'll pick up the ones for my mains(Lucario, Sonic, Marth, Luigi, and Chrom/Robin if they get in) and any of the other ones that look cool to me. I know most people don't really care but since they're going to tie in to the character customization I'm interested to see how this'll go.

I am really hyped about this game, I've never been into competitive smash at all so I really don't mind at all if this is more "casual". I just want to play it to have fun and have a good time, that's all, and I'm pretty sure it's going to deliver that to me.

Xillia characters haven't appeared on a Nintendo system, so no, they never had a chance.

There were definitely people turned off by Melee. After all, the transition from 64 to Melee was sort of like that one DBZ episode where Goku, while traveling through space to Namek, had to contend with 100 times Earth's normal gravity. So many SDs back in those days...

Hopefully when Smash 4 comes out, the competitive community won't blow itself up again now that we all know the scene won't fall apart just because the latest game wasn't the greatest thing ever.

I'd hope that 13 more characters, a far superior controller and graphics, and the addition of side+B moves would outweigh some extra heavy gravity. I can't imagine a significant amount of people liking the N64 one more than Melee.

[color=#ff69b4]I know a few people that like Smash on the N64 more then Melee and I have always found it to be really odd.

Maybe they were huge Kirby and Pikachu fans, and got pissed when they got nerfed to hell in back in Melee. Who knows?

I know someone that's the same way. Hates Melee, but loves the hell out of the original game. He also likes Brawl so I stop wondering what was up with him a long time ago.

Well pretty much everyone got used to it, but it did feel very weird back in the day. No one who started with 64 really needed to get used to Brawl gravity since it was more or less 64 gravity again.

I played a bit of both versions at the best buy in San Jose, CA.

It was fun, a bit faster than Brawl. Marth still doesn't have his awesome grab. His side b animation looks decent.(I think it's pretty beastly)
His down-b is downright scary.(saw some guy KO a Fox at 60%)

I think by 3months time everyone will make up their minds on it, and it won't be as negative as brawl's but it won't be that bad.

I only wished I could have played more. I stood for around 4hours to get in 5 minutes of game time.

Any characters you played feel different from Brawl? For example, does Marth have his Melee range back, or is it still bad?

If I ever do get this game, I'm most likely going to play Diddy/Marth again, like when I started playing them in Project M.
