what do you think of the recent change from 8bit to 10 bit?
0
So, like the title said, many fansubs recently change their encode from 8 bit to 10 bit.
at first I pretty shock, cause as far as I know 10 bit are still in limited use than the 8 bit.
because I always watch anime in my computer, downloading the codec already solves the issues, but that not always working for people that watch in it TV or others platform.
because of that I see a lot people bitching about the recent changes, some that agree while others get butthurt about it.
as FAKKU user usually also watch some anime from those fansubs, I like to hear some thought.

-Did the changes are needed?
From what I've read on different sub group sites. It's easier and makes the file size smaller. But I wouldn't know I don't sub shows.
-what should people who wants 8bit release do?
If it's only released in 10 bit. Deal with it.
-what should fansubs do for those people?
Nothing. If the group wants to release it as 10 bit It'll be 10bit. And for "those people" they can either sub and release themselves in 8 bit or hope that it comes to the US or whatever country you're residing with dubs or with those horrible yellow subs.
-which one that you prefer, 8 bit or 10 bit?
As long as I can still watch my shows I don't care whether it's 8 bit or 10 bit.

-Did the changes are needed?
Not really, but we shouldn't say no to the change.
-what should people who wants 8bit release do?
If they can't convince the fansubs to do 8bit, then they have to deal with it.
Either by upgrading their hardware or finding another sub
-what should fansubs do for those people?
Nothing, it's their work so it's their desicion, and most of them are unpaid to do these. So, if they want 10bit than it'll be 10bit.
-which one that you prefer, 8 bit or 10 bit?
Looking at the result, I honestly like the colors of the 10bit. And I have a good hardware anyways.

-Did the changes are needed?
-Wasn't really needed, but if they want to go with 10bit then it's cool. I don't have any problems playing 10bit at all so it's even better for me since the file size is lower and it looks amazing.
-what should people who wants 8bit release do?
-I guess you can update your CCCP to the latest and go from there. Even my weak netbook (specs in the spoiler below) can play 10bit with no problems. If they really do have a good computer like they claimed they do and it still doesn't work then I guess theirs is as weak as mine or even weaker then.
-what should fansubs do for those people?
-Honestly, nothing. Learn to update codecs.

Hmmm,I dont know about it, When I see between both 10bit release and 8 bit release, somehow they look the same with me...
I also thought its unfair for a fansubs to follow the will of the leechers rather than creating their own, but somehow I feel what those people said, cause the first time I play 10bit I havent install the newest codec, it was so crappy.
though I 'm very curious about it those people said that they cant watch the 10bit in their TV, which I presumed they using some DVD or Bluray player or etc, is it really true?
as I always play my video in my comp, I never found a real problem when there is some minor change like this.

-Changes needed?
Not sure, but I do not mind trying something new.
-What should people who wants 8bit release do?
Stay updated is all I can say. My laptop has no problem playing 10bit releases despite my hardware, so the fansubbers do not release 8bit then they will not.
-what should fansubs do for those people?
Not much, lol. Learning about the differences between 8bit and 10bit and how to play them are quite simple and easy to find.
-which one that you prefer, 8 bit or 10 bit?
Really couldn't care either way. Both work fine for me and both look good to me (despite I can notice the difference slightly between the two).

After doing some basic research, these are my conclusions about 8 bit vs 10 bit.
Quality:
You will -not- notice any quality differences between 8 bit and 10 bit, while 10 bit does support greater colour depth, your eyes and brain won't notice the difference, the source probably wasn't encoded in better depth and your display probably doesn't support improved depth anyhow.
File Size:
Since the source does not actually contain this better depth, the 10-bit encode is actually able to vastly reduce the file size of many videos, I've heard claims of reducing 250mb (8 bit) to 150mb (10 bit) which is pretty fancy.
Now personally I only have two use cases for my anime.
Case 1:
I watch it on my PC, in this case any image improvement beyond 720p is a waste since my monitor doesn't support better then that, however 10-bit can be interesting since it'll keep the file-size down and save me some harddrive cost.
Case 2:
I watch it on my home cinema, in this case 10-bit is rather useless to me because my mediacenter is unlikely to support the 10-bit encode and the huge hassle of connecting the PC directly is the reason I got the mediacenter in the first place.

Used to do stuff
This is going on the front page later with my next release which will be 10-bit. I need a good laugh and it should be a fun read.
-Did the changes are needed?
Yes because supporting new technologies should always be a priority. If we didn't do this we would still be stuck with the scene's quality doing xvid avi hardsubs in SD which is just eyecancer. Other new things people have started doing lately is crf as well instead of constant bitrate.
-what should people who wants 8bit release do?
Download a re encode or watch on their PC. It isn't that hard to hook your PC up to your TV if you want to do that. There really isn't a good point to downloading 8-bit anymore unless you are one of those watching anime on your iphonefags which is just stupid imo. Stop being dumb and just install a new version of CCCP already and stop living in the past.
-what should fansubs do for those people?
Nothing at all because we are all elitist pricks who will tell you to fuck off. Everyone else would have put fuck off for question number 2.
-which one that you prefer, 8 bit or 10 bit?
10-bit, Why would I prefer something that isn't as good.

If it saves file size then I would say so.

Band together and make your own fansub group.

Release in 10bit so the 'Banded together fansub group for 8 bit release' doesn't need a translator, lol.

I'm all about a lower file size, 10 bit is cool with me. Plus I use a laptop so it's easy to hook up to the TV.

There really is no reason to complain about 10 bit these days. Any computer from the past 5 years can run it just fine.
Is it completely necessary? Probably not. But it saves a little space, which is good in the long run. Less time to wait on downloads, less space taken up, which, in turn, equals more anime that can be saved onto externals.

From what I've seen, its also nice since it runs a little better on slower computers due to the file size being smaller. Fate/zero would have never run on my computer if it weren't for the 10 bit encoding.

i downloaded CCCP and the video isn't even showing up.
i can only hear audio and see the subtitles but not anything else.

I love 10bit, fucking insane small sizes. But its fucking annoying how several bullshits of people complain that they want the old fashioned 8bit. If they cant get better hardware good for them, if they cant I seriously wish they would just shut the fuck up and stop complaining to the subbers that they cant get their 8bit bullshit.

Are the changes needed
Not really but it is a good improvement because not only do you save on HDD space you get better visual quality out of it as well. Killing two birds with one stone.
what should people who wants 8bit release do?
Nothing. If they can't get 8 bit quality they should learn to re-encode the video they're watching.
what should fansubs do for those people?
Its up to them to release it in either 8 bit or 10 bit depending on which one is easier to encode into.
which one that you prefer, 8 bit or 10 bit?
10 bit by a lot shot.
