It'll create more drama IMO
example:
A is friend with B but A doesn't have B on his friend list
and then B will whine and make a drama out of it. That might be the case or it'll just create an exclusion feelings like "oh, I'm not on A's friend list"
that's just an example, it might be a little exaggerated but ^this might happen so, oh well

It has been mentioned a few times. I think people are overestimating the amount of drama and problems that could be a result of its implementation, but at the same time it would be a pretty useless feature.
It could be nifty to know when your friends are online, but simply getting the View Online back would satisfy that.
