How Can The Wipe Be Avoided In The Future
1
Pretty simple question, I just find myself wondering, is it at all possible for this site to avoid the mass wipes like those it has experienced twice already (unless an additional one happened) this year? I get that everyone was given a 150 post boost to their profile, but for people who actually care more about the context of their contributions to the forum, rather than raw post counts they tally up, coming to the forum and seeing a huge amount of quality threads and posts disappear is pretty discouraging. Surely with the amount of money this site generates in ad revenue, redundancies can be put in place, whether we're talking about raid storage, automated database backups (on a daily basis, with the ability to roll back to 7 prior save states), etc.
This type of thing should not be happening.
If it's a matter of simply not having an idea on how you can get a proper setup, pm me, i'll put you in touch with an incredible host that CAN set you up on proper equipment which will actually keep your site preserved (with proper redundancy measures in place).

I do miss Hagu and Morita's pic that we had whenever we went down for maintenance.
I can only come up with
1) Get a new server for the influx of new posts and users
2) Remind Jacob to make backups of backups of backups constantly
3) Cut of his dick so he can't shove it in the server anymore

Threads, posts, content. All of this stuff is pretty critical, and to anyone that contributed, it's lost time and effort. Site's are supposed to evolve, grow larger.. not shrink down / get rolled back. Even from a google point of view, for every new page that gets indexed on google, fakku has a chance to grow it's incoming google traffic. Hordes upon hordes of pages just disappeared, now getting tossed off the index (or they will when google discovers the pages are gone permanently), and likely hurting the site's ranking for certain terms that may have been affected by those indexed pages. It's just all around a bad thing to have pages of an evolving website disappear ~ especially when those pages actually contained quality content / discussion.
Not to mention the discouraging factor. Personally, if there are no guarantees of better care being put into preserving the data of this website, what's the point of posting and putting time and effort into threads that may disappear. Not everyone is comfortable with the idea of having their time and efforts wasted.
It just would be really awesome if better measures can be taken to help avoid this from happening again in the future. And database backups can be done automatically with cron jobs, it doesn't have to be something manually executed (from what I keep hearing, the roll back occurred to the last point where a backup was made ~ manually).

All tagging (of which I did A LOT post-semester) was lost too.
So that's a lot of wasted effort, too...

That's the way the cookie crumbles.

It was a month, nothing of real value was lost and if a user is discouraged to this extent because of a simple data loss then they should stay off the internet.
I wrote a fairly detailed long rant about troll subs the day before it happened and what I'm most upset about it I didn't see many of the replies. Giz I get that it's a lot of effort, I had everything i uploaded in the past few days (30+ doujins removed) and that translates to at least a few hours of uploading and separating every chapter of 3-4 tanks but in the end all I lost was time, and I would not be here if I wasn't looking to freely give up my time. I appreciate all the tagging you do and it is a shame it disappeared but it cant be that big a deal right? Let's try to remember what's important, the site is up, theses data loses don't happen often and we have new features that make the site better (in beta testing, you'll see the changes soon).

But the thing is, it shouldn't have to. There's a sense of acknowledgement that has to be given to the people who really put in time and effort to keep this site going (frankly, they are *more* important than the site system itself ~ without their contributions, the site would be lifeless -- a huge part of it's popularity / growth has to be attributed to their involvement), and it's wise not to take them for granted. Especially when we're talking about real contributor's as well ~ those who put in hard work to tag / upload content / make and preserve engaging conversation.

Except that is not the attitude that webmasters who care about their site should have. Time was lost, effort was lost, content was lost, and enthusiasm by a *lot* of people to keep contributing was lost. These things matter very much. I'm obviously not saying the world is going to end ~ people are going to keep contributing, but a lot of us, are not feeling very enthusiastic atm by what has happened.
Personally in a few weeks I'm sure I will feel fine to put quality posts in again, but I can't help but think I will be a lot more cautious towards the possibility that one day, a huge chunk of posts may be gone again (and this may likely have an effect on my posting frequency). Compound that if others feel the same way about other aspects of the site (posting content / tagging, etc), and you can start seeing how providing a bit of peace of mind to the community goes a long way.

I am hoping very seriously one of these features / changes has to do with how this site's backups are handled, to help ensure / prevent these types of rollbacks from happening again (at least over a crazy period ~ a month is *too* much).

I feel nothing of value was lost, I give you enough credit to see the difference in my opinion and that of the site owner, don't prove my faith in you to be pointless. I personally feel that regardless of a loss of a month users will not stop coming to Fakku and if someone is willing to leave because the site lost content for the second time in it's existence then they didn't belong here in the first place(and that is my opinion). I can confirm the new changes have nothing to do with the rollbacks, and I can honestly say that you are making WAY to big of a deal over this.

It's fine, I understand the feeling and feel the same way sometime.

While I can respect your opinion, I don't agree with it. If nothing more, at least if the admins read this, it can give them additional things to consider that they may not have prior. Aside from being personally affected by this, I am speaking from extensive experience in the field, so I have very valid grounds to my concerns (and the least thing I can do, is share them).
If you honestly believe that it is acceptable to run heavily active websites that have no redundancy / active backups in place ~ well we just have very differing opinions on the matter. Especially when considering that the income this site generates likely contributes to the livelihood of at least one person involved with actively maintaining this site.

I'm sharing my view on the situation? Much like you are?
I mean, you are ultimately replying to me when really I am addressing admins / webmasters anyway, so I think it's good that I am clarifying a distinction to how your concerns may be, vs someone responsible with actually running the site.

But what makes you think that is how the administration views this in any way. It's like you're sharing a concern which is unfounded.
This is how it went:
You complained
I said pointless complain, we didnt lose much
you said we did and admins should not feel as I do
I said dont confuse my opinion for the administrations
You said you didn't but were only relating to how the administration might feel
I said they dont feel that way and you're bringing up something unrelated to "our" conversation.
I get you're trying to address people higher up than me, but you're talking to me, so why bring up something that has nothing to do with our conversation, it's simply adds confusion to the matter and detracts from your original statement.

It's sort of like me turning around and asking you, why did you give your own opinion and view on the matter, when I didn't ask for it (and I'm not saying that, I can respect and openly welcome your opinion, but it's fine if I share mine as well).
To clarify: I'm not saying the admins of this site don't care, I'm saying that usually webmasters / admins of sites they actively maintain *do* care when a loss like this happens, it is a simple clarification that their view is likely different than yours. I mean if you are coming into a thread and basically saying that what I feel is a loss, isn't.. or that I am blowing things out of proportion / making a big deal, it's important that I try to share with you some perspective (as an actual webmaster ~ because I am one), so that you may better understand my concerns.
I get you are debating this point with me, because you want to make it absolutely clear to anyone reading this thread, that the fakku admins / webmasters do care about the site. We're sorta arguing about a point we both have the same view on.

Alright then ill break it down again. You said something, I responded to that, you responded to me by saying something unrelated(it's fine to share your opinion but why share something that has nothing to do with what we're talking about in any way).
I'm trying hard to understand what your point is here; do you think the administration on Fakku cares about things like the data loss? If so then all the arguments you've stated lead others to believe you don't believe they care.
At this point I'm passed trying to convince you that the administration care about the data loss I simply want to know why you keep bringing up your unrelated point to our original discussion.
I do feel like I'm arguing with a brick wall and that you may not even be sure yourself why you brought it up originally. I'm saying this in the hope you aren't offended, I want to comprehend.
