[Locked] Role of Moderators on Fakku

This is sad. I can't believe everyone is attacking one user - this shouldn't happen no matter how much people may dislike them.

In this particular case, at least they were initially trying to contribute. Driving away new people is not good policy.

Nonetheless, feel free to contribute to the discussion on hand, namely the role of Moderators on Fakku, without verbally attacking other members in a negative manner nor breaking any of the other rules.

You assume attacking one user is going to equal the loss of only one user. Another user with great ideas or worthwhile could see this and think, "I'm not posting - these people are jerks." or feel that if they posted something that others may not like, they would face the same barrage of insults. Many new member were lurkers at one point - many lurkers are watching what is happening. Do you think this display of hostility to someone - justified or not - is productive to the growth and prosperity of Fakku?

I say not, I say we need to give people the benefit of the doubt. The first page of that user's that was an attempt to contribute to the forums, and the same page was used to start insulting him. A moderator should of stop it - directed him in the right way, told him just to make the thread, then lock the unnecessary original thread. Instead, everyone posted insults like this was 4chan, flamed, derailed, and even a moderator or two joined in the fun of antagonizing someone.

I'm not under any disillusion that people on the internet are just a bunch of happy friendly faces, but I do believe that at the very least, we should be more helpful than this - especially those of us who know better.

No, but the users on it have a choice if they are going to show common decency towards new members.

It was made most likely for that specific reason. To give people the place to dump the majority of that crap to prevent it from spreading too much around the forum otherwise.

I treat people based on their actions. Therefore, I do not factor "new and unfamiliar" very highly when I deal with someone. This, however, does not automagically deem my actions as lacking "common decency". In fact, I do believe I was quite reasonable with the fellow, he was the one who accused me of being a liar and telling us we were terrible moderators.

Also, I don't quite care much for your proposed benefits.

Did I say extremely courteous? Even then, is not attacking someone considered extremely courteous?

Also, I did not say "moot point" in the sense that non-English majors use it (I don't know how to say that without sounding pretentious - sincerely sorry).

Many people use "moot point" in the legal sense - as in "a point or arguement that is not relevant to the case". Probably stemmed from people watching "Law and Order".
In English or other academics, it means "an arguable or debatable issue; usually one that both parties decide to place on hold in order to continue the debate" In the dictionary, the first definition is, "1. A debatable question, an issue open to argument. "

So, I was not saying it doesn't matter that you didn't like what I said, only that your opinion that these benefits do not matter is a debatable issue - not fact. Something I think you'll have to concede since not everyone is in agreement with you.

None of this addresses what I wrote. In fact, half it is based on a gross misinterpretation (or logical jumps) of what I wrote.

I'd like to explain it, but I tried to make it as simple and concise as I could to begin with. I fear any attempt to explain will lead to derailment of the point of my statement, so all I can do is advise that you re-read the statement and think about it a bit more.

Okay, your first quote, I assume you are saying the benefits of being nice to new member are not that great. So I say, "moot point" as in, "whether or not these benefits are good is an arguable point - your opinion is not standard"

I don't even consider your second quote because since I guessed we had a break down of communication as to what "moot point" meant, I'm just going to wait for your reply instead of answering a question that you might not need or want to ask anymore.

Still wrong. Your reason for why people should be nicer to newbies is that they care about making Fakku better. I say, "What if they don't care?" It's clear that they don't, otherwise today's debacle would not have occurred.

That might not be what I said at all. Do you mean "they" as in the new users or "they" as in the users that have already been on fakku and are being hostile towards new members?

The latter. Why in the world would it be the former? That wouldn't make sense.
