Suggestion for Reps

I've always been thinking of how to encourage people to post more and contribute more (to be rewarded with rep), and I have thought about having more titles. However, experience has shown that making the post count count for too much (such as making it a requisite to enter the User Uploads forum) results in spam. A while ago we had a few members who posted rather meaningless posts all over the forum to up their post count, and achieve the Elder rank (intended for those who have been with us for a long time) in less than a month. While I do commend their devotion and time spent on FAKKU, I did not like the fact the posts weren't very contributory at all, as well as being unfair to those whose posts were made thoughtfully and/or contributed to the community.
For a while I thought of implementing a rank system that takes into account both post count and rep (using a formula), and I discussed this with Jacob for a while. However, this method also has its problems, because of abuse of the rep system. We also have a lot of far more pressing issues to address, and so this got relegated to the back burner for a while.
Nonetheless, if you guys come up with an awesome rank hierarchy I might consider implementing that.
As for my stance on FPOD's idea, unfortunately I have to say I'm not liking it, for the reasons Gambler outlined so eloquently in his post. It's also something extraneous; unneeded clutter, if you will, on the forum layout.

Hm... Well I`m only a newbie. But after reading all of the post I agree that a title might lead to some sort of mislead in this forum. How about rep can be used to gain a prize, like an original doujin if reached certain numbers. That may hyped it up a bit, well that might make a rep like a money. What I can only think of other than that is by creating a right like if the rep reach a certain point u can put an image to u`r background text bubble. Well that`s cooler than title in my opinion (well its only a suggestion)

Well, u should realize my true suggestion is to put bg image in the text bubble, and the first opinion is supposed to be a joke (Well If u are reacting then it is ok). Well I just realized I forgot to use :lol: emoticon in it so Its ok
edit: imagine in u`r text bubble u can put an image of a character that u like. Where even if it is quoted it still has the image. Isn`t it great?

Here is my breakdown on the entire issue. Let me start off with the benefits.The "good":
- Having a custom title will definitely give a member a greater sense of identity within the community.
- It could spur some members to contribute to Fakku, be it in terms of uploads, creative ideas or original threads with plenty of room for discussion.
- More use for the reputation system.
The "bad":
- Having a username, avatar and signature should be sufficient for anyone to identify a particular member.
- Members may "contribute" to Fakku, simply to achieve their objective of obtaining a higher reputation. When their goal has been reached, these members may stop whatever they have been doing. I have never approved of such actions since contribution, like post counts, should be made with sincerity.
- Increase in the number of complaints. Members may place far too much emphasis on their individual reputation points. When they get de-repped, they may start questioning the loss in points, once again, bringing up the issue of a reputation log and other related topics.
- The entire idea generally favours those who already have a significant number of reputation points, which I believe is unfair to new members. True enough, all of us had to work our way up, but the mentality of elitism within Fakku could eventually develop.
- Assuming that the minimum number of reputation points needed to obtain a custom title is 20, what happens when one hits the target, only for his/her points to fall back to 19? Will the particular member be stripped of his custom title?
To prevent abuse of the system, theotaku has suggested that all custom titles be permanent, unless special circumstances call for alternative actions to be taken, which I think is a good suggestion. However, at the end of the day, I am still against such an implementation, at least for now, until further aspects of it has been addressed.
P.S. I noticed that everyone who has posted in this thread has a minimum of 10 reputation points. :D

Anyways, I know it's more than 20 so if I wrote mountains of large posts and that is the hard way. Just look for some vids, games, doujin,etc that haven't been uploaded yet and upload a few. I promise after a few good uploads you'll have more than 20.

We can't request translations for the FAKKU staff to do (recommend only if you're well respected enough, and even then it's only a consideration - based on the rules), and custom titles in addition to our rank is a no go. Maybe all rep points can do is show users who is respected. When a new user joins Fakku, and he sees FPoD with his 50+ rep points, he knows that FPoD is a user who has contributed a lot to Fakku. Same with Klown and everyone else with a lot of rep. After all, pretty much the whole community can agree that a person with fifty points or more is valuable, whether it's because that person uploads stuff or makes good posts, and fifty is a number that a person can't get easily. On the reverse side, if a person has negative rep, then it shows other users that he/she may say things that are wrong or do things that are stupid.
All that's been said before, but maybe it's true that that's all that rep is good for. And maybe that's enough. [size=5]And if it isn't, then too bad. Looks like we're gonna have to live with it being enough.[/h]

I wonder if anyone else has ideas. I honestly thought that this was perfect because it wouldn't really hurt anyone or add too much to the current system.

I still think "custom titles" and other effects is the best reward for reps, other forums have it and it has worked out great.
Most forums even have the custom title option availible at start, so i don't really see the big fuzz about no having it here, it's just a fun option.
