English Names in Hentai

I was looking at this hentai. I flip through the pages and a horror came to my face(lol). Can you guess? Nope, you're wrong. They changed the main characters name to Mike as in MIKE not Mi-ke. I scanned through and more English was revealed. My friend died and it took forever to revive him. Why do you think these scanlators/translators do this? And have you ever run across something like this?

Mi-Ke in english print doesnt look very nice. Putting hiragana or katagana would prolly get them flamed more. By putting Mike, they can effectively appease those who know that the character is supposed to be called MiKe (since they are the only ones who knows and possibly has something to say about it). For the casual reader, the name Mike (assuming there arent any story elements linked to the character's name) can be suitable since, well, a name is just a name, and its easier to grasp a name that is common in the language you are proficient enough in and therefore currently using to read.

That is unacceptable. I don't care what language it is. You have to retain the names.

The names may derive from English in the first place. I'm working on something now where a Japanese character has a name that comes from English.

Sometimes they're talking about foreigners... I know a few manga that focus on that specifically.

If I could find it, I'll upload it. I think it was just a re-write though.

You have to respect the translators who try to distill the Japanese into English rather than receiving a shitpile of Engrish. It's a lot better than the Weeaboos who try to turn everything into Japanese i.e. translators go "kawaii" instead of cute or "sugoi" instead of cool. Weeaboo translators and weeaboos in general are a bane to society and should be shot.

Sounds like a rewrite imo. I stop reading immediately when I see western names without plot exposition to justify it as much, because it's usually someone just pulling random details out of their ass to randomly fit the visuals.

I was actually unaware anyone ever paid any attention to names in a hentai.

Cause we all know you're all there for the awesome storyline right?

I know you're being sarcastic, but you'd be surprised.

I can't cite examples, but I've seen enough to rage whenever I see one... also using the words "noob" since that's not weeaboo, that's gamer lingo... in a manga. The worst was when I saw the phrase, "Then I LOL'ed" in a legitimate manga on OneManga. That made me pissed so much.

I don't mind American translators trying to Americanize the manga, it makes perfect sense and gives the story a more relate-able connection. Since most manga/hentai occur regardless of location, it doesn't matter if the story is suddenly shifted to America.

We have a thread about 'noob' in manga somewhere, that was quite hilarious.

I can think of one example... the VN Hatsukoi, which has its tranlation attributed to 4chan. In all honestly, I found the freaky weaboo translation hilarious (aside from the wierd symbols in the ero scenes- I had to edit those out before they were readable).

Could always be worse... They could call him Dave! :lol:
