They're synonyms.Humiliating is the act of humbling one person, often in a hurtful way.
> One person
This is where your ignorance shows, why would you state it's the act of doing so against only one person? You can humiliate a group of people and even an entire nation.
Be humbled
if you are humbled, you realize that you are not as important, good, kind etc as you thought you were:
ex. You can't help but be humbled when you enter this cathedral.
hu†§mil†§i†§ate
to make someone feel ashamed or stupid, especially when other people are present [= embarrass]:
Her boss humiliated her in front of all her colleagues.
I am not trying to make him feel embarrassed, I am not trying to make him feel stupid or ashamed, I am only, and only, trying to humble him.
Just because two words are synonyms does not mean they have the exact same definition, there are always fundamental differences between each word. Contemporary dictionaries like Longmans are great for easily explaining these fundamental differences, use them more often.

Are you broken or am I just falling for a carefully laid trap?.
No, he's broken. He seemed to express doubt when he asked for my opinion of him in my AMA thread and I said I thought he was uneducated.
Well, additional proof, etc.

So sorry to hear that. I don't know what I would do if I lose my dad, but yeah he's in a better place.

I will not be offering you my sympathies, for we both know that it would be empty and insincere. Pretending to care doesn't help anything.
As sift has so bluntly put it- people die every day. Every minute. Even as you read this, hundreds of lives are being extinguished.
Yes, your loss is tragic. But it's also fresh.
All wounds heal over time. Maybe not fully- but the pain will be less.
So- no. No sympathy. But rather a reminder that things will get better. And, somehow, you will get over it.

Are you broken or am I just falling for a carefully laid trap? Humbling is the indirect act of lowering someone's stature through your actions, either in a personal or public context. Humiliation is a deliberate and malicious act designed to hurt someone's emotions, usually in a public setting.

I think, what you're doing right now is also a way of showing sympathy.
Or at least, it will ease him up a little.

Negative. I am simply stating facts.
It's not like I care about him or anything.
Baka.

They are contextually completely different, pointing to a dictionary and saying 'IS SO A SYNONYM' doesn't make you right. Say you beat a Grandmaster at chess in a close game. You've humbled them because they wouldn't be expected to lose, but they haven't been humiliated. You just played a good game. They might feel humiliated but that's not the same.
It's not just that they carry a different strength, they are also applicable to totally different scenarios.

I just going off of the words themselves, not the tones carried with them. To humiliate is to lower someone's stature, just like humbling someone. On that level, they are synonymous.
Over time however, society developed different connotations for each word, applying them in different contexts to carry a different tone, thus differentiating their meanings.
Ultimately, they can be interchanged. However, it sounds awkward because of the connotations society has developed for them.

You're backpedalling. Partly synonymous is not synonymous, it's similar. Societal connotations directly alter the meaning of a word, and dictionary definitions frequently change to reflect this. Words carry their tone in definition regardless of etymology. I can't go around calling everyone a cunt then reassure them that in 1734 it meant 'rambunctious', just as you can't use gay to mean happy without framing it as being an archaic interpretation of the word.
Bye Ronnie.

I was agreeing with you, not continuing the argument. I know that was backpedalling.

I can't imagine how it must feel to undergo such a loss, so I won't act as if I can, I'll simply say good luck and godspeed.
Also, Sift is a dick. I can say something with a bit more wit, but really it all reduces to, "Sift is a dick".

Setting sympathy aside, I really don't think IB is a good place to post this kind of thread. I'm just saying.

Yes, and I'm reflecting on it.
