He has to give his all and force himself to work hard. This is his last school project and if he fails it, he'll have waste another year at school and he can't take the class until next winter. This is not an easy decision to take at all. It also seems that the loads of work can't be done alone and have to be shared equally amongst the team members.
He has been enduring all of this in order to be able to succeed. From what he explained, he really can't afford to waste another year at all.
