I read somewhere that the animation wasn't rated highly, but it has some of the coolest animation ever.
And just the general animation and character designs are great and original.

No it just shows that The slapstick humor of Nichijou isn't suited for the Japanese market. and honestly, stop assuming that only ecchi sells much more.
