I never owned the Original gameboy. Instead I had a bright green Gameboy colour which had a dent in the top left hand corner because I dropped it.
It got stolen in Secondary School.

Because most often the cartridge would just so happen to work after being blown. It was an unwritten rule to everyone who owned one

I still think it's weird that almost everyone knows about it.
Probably just something people found in common. Blowing on it is most likely the first thing people ever thought of doing because it worked
