I rarely use them mages. Skulls are better (but I only have a Red skull)
I could make as much others to get my Star Skull
Also I'd need one char more to get my Pirate ship full (and "pure")

Yes, I figured since Skulls are also cute and they're better in power while Mages are better in mana which a useless advantage in later game... But still... Me, a magic knight...? Hmm....
