Being cheery doesn't necessarily mean that someone doesn't carry a ton of crap around. Speaking from own experience there to be honest. But than again, it doesn't help to speak about such things with internet acquaintances, because they can only help up to a certain degree to cheer one up, but that's why you have friends isn't it :)?

Well the only indicators via the net are the language used in the posts and writings. Not saying that it is impossible to get to know a person over the net quite good. But yes, from my experience, most persons wear some kind of mask in public.
