One word: Quality. That's why people would care where something is from.

You make a legitimate point that I do not dispute.

However, consider this: some rodents sneak their way into the packaging of a bag of pistachio nuts. The bugs then colonise in your home state. Now you have pests that wouldn't have been infesting your home if you hadn't made that purchase.

Many products have short bits of text on their backside that tell where it is from.

It's important because quality varies from state to state (in my experience, anyway.)

In any case, this has happened to me afore; with pistachios, from California. Spider eggs were inside the bag. I was quite unhappy.

I won't deny California has problems, especially when it comes to taxes.
