It has it's bad points but I don't think it's pointless. I mean, it's an event where users get all alive and active. If you go back and look at the earliest posts here in IB (which I did), the community was all stagnant and monotonous; I think events like these helped in making the forums' community as lively as it is now.

What you want to do is get in early, steal the following waifu's:
Kirino
Konata
Ika Masume

Im happy with mine. Took the waifu I was supposed to have last game. Also any one could put a character in their sig and call it thier waifu. This is true. However I beleive that would be in bad taste and might make people think negatively of you
