Car Recommendation?

I didn't know where to post this, so here it is. I am looking to get my first car in the near future, but I am not too sure what to get. I know nothing about cars. I don't know what companies are good and what companies are bad. I am just trying to learn more about cars in general above all else. My budget is anywhere between $30,000-$70,000 (I don't even know if that's high or low..."). I talked to my mom about this, and she said since we already have 2 sedans, it might not be the worst idea to get myself a convertible or a sports car if I wanted. I have a lot of lists, but the one that interests me the most is Maserati Ghibli at ~$70,000 simply due to the brand name LOL.

idk about you, but I've been looking a the new mustang from ford. It's priced around 20k for the lower spec-ed one, and about high 40k for the v8 engine. The interior is pretty good, and unless you're a family man , the two seats are pretty okay. Idk I think it comes as a convertible too, I haven't done much research on it.
Since your family has 2 sedans, why not an off road-er? they're pretty cheap, and they look super cool when you custom install low suspension on them. the Jeep wrangler might be a good 2 seater, and if you've got money, maybe even a Hummer.

Depends largely on what you plan to do with it.
City-driving/commute, long distance, heavy load, recreation- and whether you're single, a big partygoer, druggie, family, where you live (climate) etc.
Given the prospected budget and mention of sports car, though- I'm gonna guess you live a little ways south.
What are your concerns, specifically?

Well my concern is that since this my first car, I don't want to buy something really expensive because I might scratch it or I might not end up liking the car for whatever reason. At the same time, I don't want to buy a cheap car because I am planning to use the car for a good while and it would be a waste to buy two cars in such a short period of time. Maybe I should just do some more research, or I am just over thinking this.

Damage is always a valid concern, as there's assholes and idiots everywhere- and then accidents happen.
70 grand is rather steep for a car- especially a first one, since you don't really know what you're going for. I'd say aim for something in the 20- mid 30 range; you're sure to find something nice that'll suit your tastes in that area.
Reliability boils down to what sort of road and weather conditions that you'll be faced with. You won't be needing 4x4 for your daily driver in areas with mild winters, for example.
Anyways, yeah- since you're not really looking for anything specific, I can't really recommend anything specific. Just keep to the lower end of your budget, avoid imports (should anything happen, you can have a hell of a time getting parts, ramping up costs), don't modify it unless you're going to go balls-out (half-assed jobs put a big dent in resale value), and bring a friend along who knows cars so they can spot any potential problems (it's always good to have somebody with know-how around for big purchases, as a rule).
Oh, and consult your folks or summat about the insurance.

The old Toyota trucks last forever. Newer i say the Corolla or Ford truck in the f-150 range. The terrorist 4x4 are quite stable. Toyota 4runner. With that being said i drove bikes most of my adult life and only had to use real car lately. Dodge dart II and Challenger.

I learned most of what I know about cars from watching Top Gear. You can familiarize yourself with some of the biggest names out there just by watching them. You can get a laugh or two as well.
I will agree that a budget of up to $70,000 is unusually high for a someone getting their first car. Something within the $30,000 is not overly unreasonable. For me, at that price range, the only car for me to even consider is a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.
If the car is solely for yourself, you can look into Mini Coopers. I personally find them to be rather stylish.

If your looking for a lower end sports car with good gas mileage, a VW Jetta GLI is really fun to drive. It's really comfortable and well within your price range. Jetta Specs/Info

what taste in cars do you have? of the top of my head, the cars you could potentially get with a budget like that:
Mitsu Evolution 8,9, and X
Nissan 350z, 370z, base GTR, (personally i like 240sx's but because cheap and easy to make fast)
Infiniti G35, G37
Toyobaru's (toyota-subaru) scion FRS/subaru BRZ
Subaru WRX, WRX STi
Hyundai Genesis coupe GT v6
Mazda RX8, miata
Honda S2000, maybe NSX
porsche 911, cayman, boxter, possibly GT2/GT3
Cheverolet camaro, corvette
Dodge challenger, charger
ford mustang
cadillac CTS-V
Lexus IS350, IS250, IS-F (possibly), GS400, GS-F (possibly), RC, RC-F (possibly)
BMW M3, E36, etc.
all of the above (hopefully where you live) are viable choices. personally i'll take something cheaper because i won't get to heartbroken over love-taps at the track, but that's just me. :P
have fun reading about it all and then picking one based on what you learn about them all ^.^

Go find a Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, or a Subaru Forester. Your first car needs to last long, and you'll never have a lack of parts with those cars.
