I'm interested in buying my first ever Dakimakura but I have a few questions first. What are some stores that have fairly good quality ones, since it's my first I'm not too fussed about the quality, as long as its reasonably high.
Also, what is an average price for inside + cover? I see some stores online that have covers for like $40-$50 but others have them for $100+. What is the reasoning behind this? Are the cheaper ones just really low quality?
Kinda. The cheaper ones are bootlegs, which are stolen works and typically of lower quality.
Unfortunately, the prices can vary wildly for legit covers, but the average price for a brand new cover (without the pillow) is 10-12k yen. The prices are almost never in USD, and if they are, there's a good chance it's a bootleg.
Depending on your area, you can get a reasonably decent pillow for about $20+shipping, but that depends largely on your area.
Normally I'd do a much more detailed reply, but I'm running late at the moment so I don't have the chance. A good place to look around for a legit cover is Mandarake:
https://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/search.do?searchStrategy=keyword&action=keyword&doujin=all&keyword=%E6%8A%B1%E3%81%8D%E6%9E%95
Or one of the circles that ships internationally:

Thanks for the quick reply with lots of information. I'll be sure to check them stores out.
No worries, man. I wish I could type up a more detailed reply right now, but I need to be heading out in a minute. Don't feel like you need to make a purchasing decision right away; I'll be more available later today, and am happy to answer any questions you may have. It's also worth noting that I believe Harthnir is re-releasing one of their over-the-top futanari covers, which is what your avatar is from, I believe. And I know that the older ones are probably available on Mandarake.
Yuuup, it most certainly is, Shashin. :)
Kurto, if you want to know anything about Harthnir, let me know. I own quite a few of their covers...I think like 8 in total. :)
I'd definitely suggest skimming through the thread for more information and taking a look at/bookmarking the following sites (in addition to the ones Shashin posted):
http://www.nijigenshingu.info/makura/log/index.html
http://blog.埋もれる抱ãæž•er.jp/
We've gone over the whole thing plenty of times, so you're bound to find more information on it by skimming. If not, I'm sure one of us can help you out.
Thanks for the links. Also, i would love to find out where i can get a Harthnir one.

It's seriously about time. I've loved his Horizon art, and have been saying for the past year that I can't wait for him to do a Horizon dakimakura cover. Was hoping for a Nate or Malga, since I already have anko's fantastic Kimi, but I'm just happy that he's finally doing one.
Now I just have to hope that it's not super expensive. :D

I would say that if you're looking to get into buying dakimakura that you should probably register with a proxy bidding service like www.shoppingmalljapan.com or www.rinkya.com. Once you register go ahead and set up a deposit through either PayPal or Credit Card, then once that goes through you can place a special order for items on foreign sites.
You can order the Harthnir covers here:

I hope you already knew that they have massive weens. If not...well, surprise! ;)

Am I dumb or did they change the Comiket day?
https://webcatalog.circle.ms/
I assume the numbers mean the days, but most of the H rated stuff is under day 2 ;o
Anyway, I wanted to look a few things up but didnt knew the halls are so huge :(

Yeah, it does look like a good amount of the stuff is on Day 2, but I don't know when it was scheduled for to begin with.

Seems like they may have done so yeah. Not sure why they'd change the structure of the days after quite so long, but I'm sure they have their reasons.
Also woo, comiket description and rules in english now! http://www.comiket.co.jp/info-a/TAFO/C84TAFO/C84eng.pdf Not sure how long they've been doing that, but they didn't when I went a few years ago at least.. guess the number of foreigners is continuing to rise...

Gotta love that comiket guide-book/brick! (Actually it's pretty light for the size/number of pages, made of that magical super-light japanese paper)

I remember skimming through the guide before, maybe a year ago, but it's still probably a relatively recent addition.
I'd say the three of use should create a "circle" so that we could get in early, but we'd probably have to have a booth and pay a fee, I'd imagine. If the fee were really high, it probably wouldn't be worth it just to get in early, and you'd like have to staff it during the day, which would go against the idea of getting in early t buy stuff.

Yeah to apply as a circle you have to tell them in advance what it is you'll be trading on the day (and then to actually bring it, since they do checks to ensure everything is suitable). There is also a fee (not that huge afaik), but the main barrier (aside from the lack of an actual doujin work to sell) is that it's something of a lottery as to whether new circles will be able to get allocated a spot or not at all, since the supply is far less than the demand. Only the really big name circles are guaranteed of having a spot.
Also it'd only let you get to the front of a single queue really, so while you'd have a small headstart, assuming that you wanted to visit many circles for goods it wouldn't really make that big a difference. (Nice to get to anko/marks tables before the sell out I guess though :p)

Found this to be rather interesting:

I caught it the other day when it posted, but wanted to wait and see if it was posted in error...I still don't know for sure, but I am hoping for a P80 version of the Harthnir cover(s). :D
I tweeted at Harthnir and emailed Sengendo:
https://twitter.com/Kobun_SLF/status/357229924777611264
Hopefully I'll get a response. *fingers crossed*
I am noticing that cover #410 is actually a different cover on Sengendo:
http://sengendo.a.la9.jp/410.html
Oh, and thanks for that PDF, Willow. ;)
EDIT: Turns out it was just a mistake. :(

It's seem like some post got deleted since my firefox remember it to 240-ish pages..?
I have reserved both hotel and flight ticket for this Tokyo trip already (Even though I live in japan,if you remember, Tokyo is quite far from here).
This will be my first time for comiket so.. I'm still unsure in some matter.
- with some research. It's seem like the second day(8/11) and third day(8/12) should be for a male customer? also how about dakimakura manufacturer?
- should I buy the 2000page catalog (CD?) or just do a casual(if possible) walking and buying?
- for the next time (winter) the circle choice is quite tempting. The booth shouldn't restricted for only one kind of goods so a guess I can work around it some how,..collaborate?.
- but then, I don't know about a procedure for applying a circle. While I heard something like circle.ms or applying form that being sold in the event, I'm not sure what and where should I get it
- lastly, Are there anyone going to C84 too?
I guess there will be some comiket-only dakimakura too.. not confident about being able to acquire it though. Clesta's line is out of my league for sure.

The number of posts per page was increased, rather than any posts being deleted.
For buying dakimakura at comiket, they can come from two sources, circles and companies. For circles, you need to check what day the specific circle is going to be there (either on their website, using the catalog, etc..) must adult male oriented ones are on the 2nd day this summer it seems, so the majority might be then, but you should check for any particular circle cover you're after. It is advisable to be there as early as possible on the day they're there, since covers are usually not as well stocked as doujins and can run out fast.
For covers from companies, companies are there on all 3 days, so you should head to them on the 1st day since they too can run out of stock, and it's very uncommon for them to restock between the days of the event (or when they do, it's only a very tiny amount of additional stock).
Casually walking and buying is inefficient and will mean you miss out on many things you might want as they'll sell out before you reach them. But it can be more fun and less stressful than preplanning a perfect traversal of the area, and then getting delayed by the huge queues and not getting to as many stalls as you hoped :p.
I think exokiel was going to C84 as well. Me, Shashin and Kobun are going to be at C85 but not 84.

Anyone know anything about the Stylus coupon codes that supposedly come with their Carnelian covers? I'm not sure when it was added, but seeing as how it looks like all the Stylus Carnelian girls are going to get a revision, saving 2,000 JPY on each wouldn't be too bad.

I will attend C84.
Yes, you should buy the catalog. Make notes where you want to go and draw paths and such. I heard the book is thick but made of light paper.
Also: http://ticktank.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/ticktanks-english-guide-to-comiket-part-1-general-info/
Though they changed the adult day. It's not day 3 anymore, it is day 2. So if you want to get stuff from your fav ero circle you should come early on that Sunday.

So I've been using an A.C.G. Arts cover I purchased from Toranoana for about 2.5 weeks now, and it's the absolute worst 2WT I've ever experienced. I'm used to 2WT being fairly fragile, but over the last few months I've been taking note of how long I've been using covers and when the damage occurs. Even A&J 2WT, which has a reputation for being very fragile, only had a few nicks after I decided to change the cover after about 8 weeks.
It has been 2.5 and I'd already say this cover is ready to be retired. I first noticed major damage on both sides a night or two ago. The majority of the damage is in the face area, which is understandable given that I've been growing a beard. There is damage in other areas down the pillow, however, and I was also had various states of facial hair while I was sleeping with all of the others. In short, there's just really no excuse for how quickly this material has deteriorated, other than it being poorly made.
The pictures don't really capture the damage too well, but here's two shots I managed to take:

@Shashin: Damn man, that sucks on a major level. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Seriously though...that really does suck. May as well go for broke with it! :D
Bought a few new covers - went out on a limb without really knowing what this Nanamin cover looked like, as a silhouetted image was the only thing I think was ever posted...at least it's the best I could find to a full shot.
I've gotta' get going, but here are a few quick shots I took for you guys.
Sorry for the crap quality. I used my phone for these and did a very hasty job in both taking the pictures and color adjusting, since the lighting in my room is awful.

Yeah, it really sucks. If I had known the material was going to be that shitty, I probably would have passed on the covers altogether, as much as I love the art. I guess I'm still glad I got the Golden Darkness cover, but I definitely would have passed on the SAO one.
Indeed it does. I think the new Karoti cover looks really good, and it's up for mail order for a few weeks. I'd buy a copy, but as Kobun knows, I'm over my SMJ bidding limit. >_>
Edit: WTF, it seriously looks like W-Canvas may be selling bootlegs on both their English and Japanese stores:

All are credited to the circle "Elist", but I see a lot of Niro's art, a Blueberry cover, some Verdant Force work, maybe some Dakemakura stuff, and some other circles I can't draw the mind off the top of my head.

Well, I suppose it's possible they were just super lazy about entering in the correct circles. But yeah seems quite dodgey.

Nah, the other dakimakura listings on their site are fairly accurate and I'm actually familiar with a good number of those covers, from a bunch of different circles. Of the ones I'm familiar with, only the Dakemakura ones are offered in 150x50. Some of the artists aren't even active anymore (Blueberry), so it's just fishy all around. It's probably the same deal as with J-List a few years back; they sold a few bootlegs, and when they were caught, they essentially said that the vendor had told them they had secured resale rights.
