Ah. It's actually a re-release, it sold a few years ago at C78 or something, I think. Back then, it was horrendously expensive, with only 1-2 ever popping up on YJA, for over 40k. I've wanted it since then, and when it was announced to be at C81, I was very happy. The majority of them sold in the 24-30k range, but I managed to pick mine up for 18k. :)

I just do it locally. Started with an ad or two on Craigslist/making connections in classes (Japanese specifically), and I've just had repeat customers/been recommended since then. It's not a lot of money when compared to dakimakura covers, but the profit margin is fairly decent (doujinshi I pick up for 200-1000 yen on Mandarake, and sell for $10-50.)
I don't have a real job myself right now; the economy is shit and I'm focusing on school. I do some odd jobs every now and then for a bit of cash, but it really isn't enough to sustain my hobby.

It's fairly hard to come by most of their covers these days, so if there is one you have your eye on, I'd definitely jump on it. All of them are excellent, but my favorite two would probably be the Dream Club and Kampfer covers.

Yeah, I've seen the DreamClub cover floating around YJA for a couple months now it seems, but I can't bring myself to pull the trigger on it @ something like 19K yen.

Unfortunately, 20k seems to be about the average price for the dakimakura covers I buy. T_T Some are under, some over, but a good number seem to fall on that magical mark. I think I paid 22k for my copy of the Dream Club cover, and I'd say it was worth it, but tastes differ.

I'm sure we've all had happen to us countless times. My most recent was actually that anorexic Patchy (the purple haired chick you commented on earlier.) Was on YJA for ages before I finally came around to buying it... two or three days later, the circle decides to resell it. Still, I actually got a fairly decent deal on it and didn't overpay by more than 1000 yen or so.
Sure beats the time I overpaid by 10000 yen, and the webstore opened the same day for the item I bought. -_-

Actually, there's no way to predict whether a cover would be re-released or available via web order.
It's a sad fate for outsiders especially if you're after the more famous circles like Marks and Ankokubu, the prices always rips a new hole in you.

Yeah not much you can do to avoid getting "caught" by webshop releases that would have saved you money. They do tend to be more likely for eroge company's releases than for doujin circles, so being more patient for those is possibly recommended. Do check the history of webshop releasing for any circle/company though on the dakimakura blog, as that gives you a strong indication of whether they're likely to do so again for their current releases or not.
