Do people treat you weird for liking Japanese music
0
I was at the college today and I was waiting for my class to start and decided to listen to some of my Japanese music on my cell phone. I didn't have headphones with me for it so I just let it play from the speaker which is kinda loud even at half volume. It wasn't distractingly loud and there weren't that many people around but I still noticed a lot of people giving me weird looks as they walked by. A few braver people actually walked up and asked me "what the hell I was listening to". I didn't really take offense because it's nothing I haven't heard before. I just turned the volume up a little and let them hear it. They couldn't seem to fathom why I like Japanese music when I can't understand it(which I can to a degree). I told them to listen past the lyrics to the "music" because music is much more than just the lyrics.
Anyone else had incidents like this where people give strange looks or treat you weird for liking Japanese music? Oddly enough, it's similar to how people give me weird looks or comments over my interest in bands like N*Sync, Backstreet Boys, and 98 Degrees too. I'm not gay, I just enjoy their music the same way I enjoy Japanese music. Do you get offended when people try to criticize your interest in Japanese music?

Not really offended, since they are just missing out some of the best music in the world and I don't feel inclined to inform them any further.

I feel offended, because they insult the Japanese to a great degree, always, really its very annoying.
My sister always insults the Japanese because I watch anime and listen to Japanese music and mimics them in a disgusting way and she gave me the ''weird look'' when I told her that I understand Japanese up to a certain extent.
A friend of mine, heard some my Japanese songs from my cellphone through the speakers ( because I forgot to bring my headphones) and said something like ''what are these things you hear man, they are weird'' and I was like ''Oh, is that so? Well I don't care about you r opinion at all then''. The next day I bought my headphones and he said ''may I listen to your Japanese song with your headphones this time'' and, he tried it on and then he entered a whole new world. He changed his opinion so quickly, you would be surprised as well, he first listened to ''Higurashi no Naku Koro ni'' (upon my recomendations) and he was like ''DUDE, THIS IS SO UNIQUE'' and went crazy over it, then I let him listen to ''Don't say 'lazy' '' from K-ON! and his opinion of that was ''those who are sane will go insane and those are insane will go sane from listening to it'' then he took most of collection from me and still does nowadays as well.
Sorry for the wall of text, I just don't know how to use the spoilers.

I give ppl the stare cause there's something about me that ppl always have to stare at me. So i try not to listen to japanese music loudly unless I'm driving cause I'm trying to avoid getting stared at however I do listen to indian music loudly on my cell and stuff and smile if ppl stare at me.

Yep, I've had both family members and friends think I'm strange for listening to a piece of music in another language.
Actually, most of the "Japanese" songs I listen to don't even have lyrics, so I guess it's from Japan, but it's not like there's any use of the actual Japanese language in there.
So I don't really get it. Or rather, I do, but the lack of open-mindedness is just so astounding to me that I can't help but think, "wow, really...?"
Wonderful music is wonderful no matter where it was made or what language it's in.

Nope, I've got a lot of people into it here... I didn't find it on my own though, my brothers girlfriend got me into J-rock, she would give me her headphones and tell me to listen...

Some of them but I really don't care whatever they say. I am what I'm. I don't mind the musics that they like so they should also do the same to me.

Yep. Yep. Yep. I've had maybe 2 people NOT treat me like I'm stupid that I like the music. One was a co-worker who loved the beat to "Lost Story" covered by Akiakane. 2nd was a friend who liked anime and manga like I do.
Most of the time they don't comment though just give me a weird ass look. Though my parents make comments about it all the time. Most of which annoy the hell out of me and I end up walking away. I mean I can understand them not liking it but to blatantly make fun of me and it, I don't take to kindly to. Even though I know they're joking.
My main arguement for it is -
"Are you so closed minded you don't accept something or someone different? Good luck in your future, then."
That did get my best friend to shut up about it, and accept my music when riding in MY car! :D

yes, and i always get the frequently asked question...how can you understand them? to which i always answer translated lyrics.

Yup, is something like my cellphone sounds and they start to do some babbling and then say:
"*sigh* still listening that Chinese monkeys music?"
then i answer back.
"go listen Justin Bieber bitches, this is too much manliness for you to handle."
it's like everyday bread.
but when a respectful one ask me why i listen to this i answer.
"Do you listen music in spanish/english?, that's why i do, it's no different, it's just music in another language and that's all, as long as it sounds good to me i listen to it, if you take a look at my playlist you would find a lot of mixed up things, Chilean music, Japanese Music, some Modjo and daft punk, and even some hip-hop, so basically i'm open to listen everything that sounds good."

AHAHA this is just like me.
I remember one time when i was listening to Haruhi's Hare Hare Yukai quite loudly on my headphones. It was quiet out side when this smaller boy walked past me and gave me the most confused look on his face!
My anime loving friend doesn't understand it either, which really annoys me about him. Then he started listening to some songs in norweigen(?). He doesn't get input of that language anywhere, so why couldnt he understand doing it in japanese :|
I am a music student in A level, so i use my excuse as being a greater person to music. Anyway, i don't listen to it BECAUSE it is japanese, but i am completely hooked on their industry. If the population was the same as america, then the industry would be the biggest. So what is wrong with it?
ALSO
Alot of other countries that aren't primarily english speakers would listen to english music. The thing that annoys me about america (and england i suppose, which where i come from) is that they only care about their own country :/
Sorry for the essay/rant

I think the main concept here is being 'open-minded'
I am a very creative person so i always have hundreds of reasons to back up anything i do

I am always looking for new music so I listened to both of the ones you listed and I really like Don't Say Lazy but I couldn't get into Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. I have a little sister too and she drives me up the wall with her careless comments about my interests in anime, music, Japanese society, language, etc etc. My other sister sister never used to tease me about it and she even expressed some small interest in it. I think it's just a teenage thing........hopefully.
