How do i overcome resistance?
0
Hello, I'm currently learning to play on the piano, i have this great book i can read that teaches me how and I even have a grand piano at home. I basically have everything i need to learn how to play.
There is a problem though, I have a hard time getting myself to read the book consistently on a daily basis, this is what i classify as resistance.
I just can't get myself to read even though I want to learn to play on the piano.
Does anyone have any tips or advice for doing something consistently, and overcome the resistance.

Could try a reward system? You get something nice (food, buy something small and cheap, or do something fun) for doing something you were too lazy to do before. Think if it as an incentive. Other then that just do it or don't do it, it's your choice. If you find you really can't bring to do it then come back to it later. If you worry about coming back to it later then you are overthinking the resistance thing way too much. Think of this saying "You can lead a horse to water (but you can't make him/it drink)".
Other then that idk, I have owned up to my laziness when I am lazy, but I make sure to get the things I must do done. I stopped trying to force myself to do things (such as the piano) if I had a lot of resistance to it, because I felt it was ridiculous of me to waste all that energy with no result when I could have been doing something more meaningful. I either do it or I don't and maybe will get back to it later. If I don't then whatever; it's all about priorities.
Anyways good luck with it.

Maybe you should try other ways to learn to play the piano? If the problem for you is reading the book, maybe instead of reading the book, you watch videos from youtube for example. Or maybe hire a instructor (can be pretty expensive, dont know).
I also agree what Misaki said, if you are having hard time learning something new, not because its hard, but because you are not yourself willing to put the required effort into learning, because your just lazy or whatever, then maybe playing the piano is not worth your time.

Thank you for the tips, but the reward systems never seem to work for me and I have lots of reasons to learn to play piano, the book is also fun to read, but for some reason its still hard to overcome the small initial resistance.
Maybe i should try the mini habit system, make a deal with myself that i read 1 page a day, and then i will probably read more than one page when i first begin to read, but its easier to begin when its only 1 page i need to read.
