Reasons For Being a Bad Guy or Antagonist
0
Okay so I pretty much think we've all seen a lot of bad guys in our days, and I was thinking, what are their reasons for being one?
There can be plenty of reasons for being the bad guy and I hope I only listed the most common and general ones.
1. I wanna takeover the city/country/world/universe because *insert reason here*
2. I'm bored, so lets kill stuff
3. Moar Powah!!
4. Tragic past
5. Humans betrayed me
6. We are superior lifeforms
7. I need to/must play the "Bad Guy" role
8. To make the story interesting
9. And then, they'd want to have a harem of the opposite sex who's age wouldn't matter
For me, the most unique one would be that They'd want to free all living things of the suffering that the world can offer and give their souls eternal peace, though they would be free from harm, they would also be robbed of the experience to experience the joyful things, ultimately resulting as if they were dead even if alive
But what about you? What do you think is most most reasonable(being a bad guy is reasonable?), interesting or maybe even most unique reason a someone turns to be the bad guy of the story? btw they don't need to be the main antagonists

For me I believe anyone can be a Bad Guy/Antagonist. There is nothing physically stopping a person from being bad. Yes there can be consequences, but once again it doesn't physically stop a person. Every time I cross the streets and the lights turned red(for cars) I think what if the car that's coming doesn't brake. After all he has the power to decide and not brake.
Also break free from the average/normal every day

Hmm...so I take it that you mean everyone and anyone can be labeled as the "bad guy" as long as there is a difference in values/moral/practices/religion and stuff like that, or how we perceive things to be good or bad huh?
I guess that's reasonable.
And I think that is a loophole in my question...
Okay then, How about we look at things in your point of beliefs? [/h]

I can play the bad guy because of a change in pace, also to give myself a free time. Being a good person is all I am so when I get ti be the bad guy I won't back down from any choice that I make.
So my reason would be a change of pace

I am Shadow the Hedgehog. I have amnesia therefore I will milk that fact and ally with whoever I like and be evil or good for no reason in search of my memories.
I'm also immortal but I haven't lived long enough to be pissed about it, just been in suspended animation most of the time because the series calls for it.
He's more of an antihero but he counts I think.[/h]

Well in the case of tentacle monsters I think they are just trying to survive by spreading their seed.

Think about it from a "bad guy's" perspective. They follow a specific moral construct that, even through the general consensus of society, can only be proven wrong subjectively. Let's just take the fact that there are around 7 billion humans living on this planet. Anyone who thinks about it seriously, realizes it poses a problem to the general well-being of the species and the planet. One way of addressing the problem would be to develop the global infrastructure to accommodate the growth of the species, while minimizing the negative effects on the global ecosystem. Another method would be managing the population through an intricate process of mass murder.
The morals of the latter are questionable, maybe even evil, but what if the ends justify the means?

It's actually common that they only wanted peace but they are doing the wrong way.

It would seem like you wish to write a story.Yeah something like that for a school project, I'm thinking of a story where the half of it is a hero vs. villain but then becomes dark hero(villain) vs. Corrupt hero.
And yeah, my first thought was what Limegreen above me just said, but kinda having hard thoughts on making it appealing for the viewers because I'm thinking pretty heavy stuff here while the judges will be a class of 4, 5, 6 graders XD

Because I lost faith in humanity, I wanna destroy them all for being smart but idiotic at the same time.
If I was an antagonist, I'd wanna be like Koko Hekmatyar.

Being the villain is simply just going against the wishes of the protagonist in a story.
In a lot of stories the morality of both sides come into question, and the villain may have a noble cause but do so through negative means. Also the villain might have a different set of morals on what is right and wrong.
For example, the aliens in Parasyte. They are the villains because they kill and eat humans. But that is simply what they were genetically programmed to do, and are just surviving. Some even learn to adapt to human society. But because they are killing humans, they are the villains.
