Scanlines Tutorial
1
*points to her avy*
i have seen a lot of avies around here of images/avatars taken from manga, some with scanlines. my avy is not, i added scanlines in there myself because i thought it looked neat =] I thought you guys might enjoy making something similar, so i made a tutorial on how to do it yourself using photoshop cs2 (which is actually free on the adobe website)
here it is:
ok the resizing is making it impossible so i am remaking it in text form here:
How to create scanlines on a stock image.
#1 You need to create 2 new patterns. To do that first you need the pattern image.
a) Open a new canvas, 3 pixel width, 3 pixel height.
b) Using pencil tool create 3 black boxes like this:

c) Now go to Edit > Define Pattern and name it 'Scanlines Black'
d) Repeat steps a-c only this time make it white and name it 'Scanlines White'

#2 Now you need to go to your stock image and fing the highlights/shadows to put scanlines onto.
For this tutorial I am going to be using this image:

a) Go to Select > Color range
Select: Shadows, ok
b) New Layer
c) Paint Bucket, change it from fill foreground, to pattern, and select your 'Scanlines Black' pattern. Now fill the selected area.

d) Duplicate layer once or twice. For each layer mess around with the opacity, fill, and the layer type.
I like to do one layer 25% opacity at overlay, and one soft light at 50% opacity.

e) Repeat steps a-d, but this time in the color range selection do highlights, and fill with the white scanline pattern.

Finished!
You can add scanlines to anything, to a render, to a background, or to the entire overall image. I hope you enjoyed this simple but fun little tutorial!
or if for whatever reason you can't do it, (lazy, don't want to install photoshop, etc etc) just gimme an image and i will do it quick for you. it is quite easy/simple takes me less than a few minutes ^_^; it also works really well in making a sig, adds a neat effect.
if you use it please post the results, I wanna see how these turn out ^_^ also don't forget to mess with the layer settings to something you want, if you want it more noticeable turn the opacities up, if you want them less noticeable turn the opacities down.
