Upgrading to iOS 8 if you don't have enough space?
0
I want to upgrade to iOS 8. I put it off because I figured it would be buggy on release and stuff, but I want to get it now... But I have a serious problem and I don't know how to get around it.
I have 6 GB of memory on my phone... Odd number but it's the one I was given with my upgrade a couple months back. About 1.8 GB of memory is used from the basic apps alone, meaning if I delete literally everything I can I still won't have the 4.7 GB needed to download iOS 8 because of the data of the aps I can't or don't want to delete, like my contacts and address book. I also apparently have songs stored on the cloud from U2 that I can't get rid of either. Didn't know I had that because I don't use the music section.
Anyway, how am I supposed to upgrade if my phone litteraly does not have enough space built in to it to begin with to download the upgrade?

It only displays 6GB because the rest is already allocated to the OS and default apps. How many GB of data/apps do you have that cannot be moved? As for the U2 album, it was given away for free during the iPhone 6 launch. Also make sure your phone is actually compatible with iOS 8 first (ie. 4s and later)

Backup your stuff --> delete --> updateI have backups sure, but the most basic apps that come with the phone take up about 1.7 GB. And I only have 6 GB. And I can't delete any of the apps that came with the phone... And even though I've never opened most of them they still are using data.
All I really use my phone for is for internet and video browsing, and of course, as a phone.

You can upgrade your iOS through iTunes, then it isn't necessary to make more.
When you are updating over the air, it needs to make a mirror image of your iOS on the phone.
With iTunes you don't have that problem.

Update your device using iTunes
If you can’t update wirelessly, or if you want to update with iTunes, follow these steps:
1.Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
2.Plug in your device to your computer.
3.In iTunes, select your device.
4.In the Summary pane, click Check for Update.
5.Click Download and Update.
If you don't have enough free space to update using iTunes, you'll need to delete content manually from your device.
