When did this site become Pay only or Mostly pay ?

I used to frequent quite a bit, And am a 8 year member, but i dont remember having to pay to view pretty much anything ive clicked on.. what has happened to the site i used to know ? :(

There may be freebies in the future but for now it's almost entirely a subscription service. That is of course unless you buy a Book then you have unlimited access to it, and potentially a physical copy.
