And I noticed how some folks going on about how this hurts. The feelings. Ect. And I got to thinking, "Do these people really go deep into the Kancolle fanbase and the stuff they make?" My guess is no, they don't. So, I figured since I want to be the dick to ruin the happiness of vanilla fans with some of the stuff I upload. I'll think I'll do the same with this series and upload some of "Hit too close to home with the inspiration for Kancolle, the Pacific War of World War II."
First up, fanart...

Yuugumo and Makigumo. This can actually be tied to how the actual Makigumo sank. During a troop evac operation from Guadacanal, Solomon Islands, Makigumo tried to avoid any potential battles with American PT boats and ran into a sea mine, disabling her. Yuugumo was with her and quickly jumped into getting all the survivors off of Makigumo and then she was given the order to pull the trigger and scuttle (intentionally sinking a friendly ship to keep it from falling into enemy hands) Makigumo. Want me to twist the knife even further? Makigumo's sunk/death quote in Kancolle is this, "Yuugumo-neesan, I can't move. Leave me behind. This will be my final selfish request. If it's you, Yuugumo-neesan, then scuttle me please..."

The doomed fate of the Nishimura fleet. During the long Battle of Leyte Gulf that spanned all around the Philippines. Admiral Nishimura was the head officer of a fleet of seven ships that went through the Surigao Strait in the Philippines, on their way to Leyte Gulf. They were battleships, Fusuo and Yamashiro, heavy cruiser, Mogami, and destroyers, Asagumo, Yamagumo, Michisio, and Shigure. Once they entered Leyte Gulf, they were intercepted by an American fleet of over 50 ships. Of those seven, Shigure was the only one who not only got out of Surigao Strait, but actually managed to get through the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944.

The end results of the Sixth Division Destroyers after the Pacific War. When it was all said and done, Hibiki was the only survivor. Akatsuki, Ikazuchi, and Inazuma all sank at different times in the war.

Yeah. Let's dig up a not so nice part about Kitakami's past. Near the end of the war, Kitakami was loaded with Kaiten torpedoes. What are Kaiten torpedoes? Man-controlled torpedoes with the intent of being a suicide bomb.

Hiei was damaged heavily during the Battle of Guadalcanal and the order was given to Hiei's escort destroyers to scuttle her after a full evacuation. Yukikaze was one apparently one of those ships. However, the order was quickly rescinded after reports came in that Hiei can still move and there was still men aboard and trapped on Hiei. But, the order didn't get to Yukikaze in time and Hiei was scuttled and sank with about 180 men still aboard her.
And if that's not enough, how about a timeline of the rise and fall of said ships with other historical details.
Hell, Nicovideo has a tag dedicated to this sort of stuff.
Remember, one doujin may have Haruna enjoying quality time with her admiral and another one may have her arm blasted off from enemy fire. There's a yin and yang. A light and a darkness within Kancolle.
