My favorite type could be the betrayer type, and the reason why i like this
type of villain because it's sneaky, smart and " OH SHIT!!! " kind of thing.
Example Griffith from Berserk.

Does Hannibal Lecter count as a villain? If so then that's my answer.
I like intelligent villains.

He is a villain. In fact, the American Film Institute ranks him as the number one villain in movie history.

*Intelligent and strategic, thinks 10 moves ahead of the hero and doesn't make any miscalculations.
*Is highly capable of fighting.
*Very charismatic so he can rise an army of loyal soldiers.
*Has a sadistic personality.
*Is able to keep a cool head in any scenario.
*Ambitious, will do anything to achieve his goal.
*Does not hesitate to kill those who are in the way of his plans.
*Oh and epic BGM every time he is on screen.
Yep, that seems to be a good villain for me.

My ideal villain should be INTELLIGENT, not the kind that gets blown up all the time due to his/her own incompetence. Intelligent villains are much more interesting than cannon fodder.
That said, all three villains from The Dark Knight trilogy are awesome.

You should watch Se7en, Silence of the lambs and maybe Oldboy.

Crazy psychopaths, but cool crazy psychopaths.
Like John Travolta from The Taking of Pelham 123.
The only reason I liked that movie. MOTHERFUCKER!
I guess that's also why I liked Tony Montana so much too.

Well I like the crazy psychotic type that whenever the hero and company walks into a room he responds with a grand sweeping gesture and something along the lines of "Welcome friends....." etc.
He also never kills unnecessarily
Loves to smile
Is physically equal or superior to the hero
Genius level intellect
Extremely witty
Only way to beat him is a group effort

The only necessary quality would be charisma. Other than that, I can either go for psychotic, loud and strong or intelligent, manipulative and controlling. So either Jack Torrance or Hannibal Lecter are fine choices. The problem I have with intellgent villains though is that the writing can be filled with tiny (or massive) plot holes that force the viewer to cover them with artistic liberty or, in many cases, deliberate ignorance. This happens, I submit, with Nolan's Joker and perhaps with Jigsaw too.

Psychopaths are great, I love me some crazy villains that do what they do for no real reason or for some crazy made up beliefs.

One that you could consider a useless side character that suddenly become the head of all of the evil.

My favorite type of villains are one's who are badass. They break the rules, they are good at being bad, they do everything in style, they are unique, they can be somewhat charming, and the biggest thing is even if they are conceited or narcissistic you can overlook it (aka isn't the only thing you see with them). Biggest thing with any form of character is for them to have charisma; something about them is memorable and classic.
Methodical villains and downright psycho villains are probably my two favorite types of villains.
Some of my favorite villains include; The Joker, Hannibal Lector, Albert Wesker, Freddy Krueger, Venom, Ganondorf/Ganon, Frieza, Cell (DBZ), Aku (samurai Jack; come on he is pretty classic lol), Pinhead, Sephiroth, Shishio Makoto (Rurouni Kenshin), The Master (Doctor Who; though he did get on my nerves sometimes), Majora (from Majroa's Mask).
