Am I the only one sick of regenerating health?
Are you sick of regenerating health in FPS games?

Wow it seems like every FPS out there seems to prefer regenerating health. Am I the only one who thinks it makes a game boring as fuck? it's like Yahtzee said; shoot, duck, wipe jam off face. It feels like it takes no skill. I genuinelly miss health bars with the occasional med kit. Or in wolfensteins case, chicken.

Well, I came from the era of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom so health bars are pretty much a default for me... along with eating food scraps off of POW prison cell floors. At the same time, it's kinda annoying having to backtrack all over the map to look for said food scraps or a health kit because I caught a few bullets too many with my torso and my eyes won't leave my minuscule health bar long enough to realize that I'm actually running headlong into an enemy stronghold.
I do like using BOTH health systems in a game kinda like Halo: CE and Just Cause 2, where you get the cushion of a small amount of regenerating health but would still benefit from the use of an occasional band-aid.

I agree with psbox in that I find fun in having both systems like in the first Halo. However, I don't really enjoy it unless the shield is weak (legendary all the way).
Having said that, I also enjoyed Goldeneye, with the health bar AND non replenishing armor :D

Well ideally I wouldn't want to backtrack either but the whole duck/shoot/wait formula is even worse. It just ruins the gameplay for me.
EDIT: Also yeah I liked Halos system of health/shield as well.

Yeah, if the regenerating health thing is too powerful, you loose a lot of challenge (and fun) in the game. And if I'm not mistaken, I think Time Splitters also had the armor/health meter thing too.

Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. I really liked the classic health bar, but with that you'd also need enough med kits around. Regeneration takes care of that problem, but as FF said, also introduces the new possible problem of "infinite health". If balanced with for example smarter or similarly regenerating enemies that won't let you just recharge without punishment, it could work quite well, though.

Most games, you regen health with no negative effects or such.Which makes for run shoot, get shot, hide, rinse and repeat.
At least in the case of Infamous or prototype, its there but there are better alternatives since its so slow(like draining electric or consuming people)
I think for FPSes its not exactly the best to use it only for a health system since a player can just camp, shoot and camp.
Republic commando also has the shield health thing and I think it is a more better system to use.

A system I've encountered, though with the lack of a full HUD is part assumption, is Bad Company 2's multiplayer.
My theory is that your health regenerates, but does so at an extremely slow speed. This makes it so medics and their health packs are still a necessary part of the game, but also doesn't make it so that if you can get out of the action for a while, you're still screwed.

I personally like F.E.A.R.'s take on health.
You have the standard numerical health meter, but when your health drops below 40, after some time it will very slowly regenerate back to 40.

I'm a STALKER who goes Redux sometimes even Redux Hardcore.
I enjoy bleeding to death from a single bite, I like that I can't even dress my wounds in the middle of firefight and I like that the happy juice and antibiotics in a medkit are almost as bad as the wounds themselves as they give me the shakes and I flash in and out of consciousness.
Yeah...
...I'm weird.

Its pretty annoying, I used to play Medal of Honor all the time and you would always have to run around looking for those canteens, but nowadays most if not all FPS games have regenerating health.

will it can be a pain at times on some games and others its ok....but i have to say
this regenerating health. takes all the fun and thinking away.

It doesn't bother me. I like them both, but I will say that I think there are too many regenerative health based FPS and they are starting to crowd out the more classic models.

No.
Medkit or no medkit, if the game is made right, I care not.
Well for me personally I feel games like Bad Company 2 are made right, but the health system makes them more boring, that's all.
online wise or single player wise?
Both?

I really actually enjoyed Prototypes health system. But then again I'm not really talking about that genre.

Except that just makes people wait for longer.
FPS's like Team Fortress 2 and Unreal Tournament 3 don't have regenerating health.

Personally I really enjoyed Far Cry 2/MoH: Airborne's stance on it. Your health is divided up into sections, and once one is depleted it no longer regenerates.

Too bad Airborne itself was a bad game. Far Cry 2 was more of an acquired taste. I prefer the first (Cry-Tek's for the PC) with extra mods.
